The German government is contemplating to turn the tax ID into a general ID used by all institutions. I have mixed feelings about this. On one side, it allows the government to fingerprint people, but on the other side it simplifies a lot of bureaucracy involved in dealing with personal information.

@garritfra Bio metrics are pretty easy to forge (more than most people think) and forcing everyone to register them is definitely a very bad thing.
National IDs are pretty much always a bad idea as well.
