@mh
Here's the list of hacks I've personally collected (I'm guessing you're talking about iOS.)
The easiest is to just have a notification feed on a website (possibly with an RSS feed and maybe even a mailing list.)
Most OSes give the built in mail client special privileges that allow it to slowly poll (but not get pushed to via the imap IDLE verb) imap. Interestingly the iOS notepad app gets update from another mail folder (you can edit it in mutt to) which can give you a funky delay tollerant wiki. I have a program I wrote a while ago that will watch mailboxes for updates and push the notes to a static html directory (the annoying part is that pictures are inlined as bas64 by the notepad app which is a pretty awful way to handle that but idk what else you would do with that architecture.)
Most OSes have a CALDAV client that will poll for updates. But then you have to run a caldav server which sucks.
Many messaging apps allow users to create custom webhooks to trigger push notifications. Discord supports this. Colloquy has a push relay server intended to be used for notifications from a remote server (usually a bouncer but I have a fork of miniircd somewhere that lets you see mentions in channels you've been in as push notifications.) Unfortunately there's just one person maintaining it so the availability wasn't great last time I checked.
iSH can run in the background but it requires turning on the GPS front end amplifier (from what I understand) so that will drain your battery very very fast.

🇬🇧 The EU keeps funding illegal an unethical surveillance research. Nobody knows how often.
We had a long sheet of potentially relevant projects compiled. Can you help us find the problematic ones? #Crowdsourcing

The #PinePhone modem (yes, the modem) can now run Linux kernel 5.10 ( @postmarketOS )... we're sure many of you know where this is heading :)

@koreymoffett I've hosted my own email for years (and my first email was one hosted by one of my parents.) It's not as bad as people say although you do need to have certificates now (which means letsencrypt+certbot really) and dmarc (which means a decent domain registrar)
Also ISPs have blocked hosting email on residential connections for a very long time so you'll want a VPS.
I use OpenSMTPD (with a hackish custom patch to allow marked address so I can catch companies putting me on spam lists) but I've used postfix, and plan9's "qmail" (which is unrelated to the qmail package on most distros.) None of them are *too* hard. Also some domain registrars will host email on your domain for free or a very small fee.

lmao Elon Musk tweeting about Signal messenger caused an 1100% increase in the stock price of a completely-unrelated company with "Signal" in its name https://www.cnbc.com/2021/01/08/elon-musk-boosts-signal-app-signal-advance-stock-jumps-1100percent.html
Today we celebrate #HumanRightsDay
Passed exactly 72 years ago, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights memorializes the basic notion that fundamental freedoms, including privacy, expression, and access to information, are essential for people all over the world.

@civodul this looks similar to installing “version 9999” with portage/gentoo. I did a quick search and didn’t see anything on the wiki to talk about pros/cons but I’m sure there are gentoo users (who understand/are careful enough with portage that they don’t need to reinstall it every 2 years) who can share their experiences with this.
@eff Social media companies should not give in to this pressure. If social media companies comply with the law, the Turkish authoritarian government wins without a fight. YouTube should not lead the retreat. [6]

Email mastodon+swiley@swiley.net (this makes all of my computers beep and turn on an indicator light and is always the fastest way to reach me.) I was on octodon a while ago but abandoned my account. I've never been a member of gab or parlor.
If you’d like to learn to program I would consider the SICP [1] more or less the peak of American CS pedagogy (at least as far as beginners go) along with “The Practice of Programming” once you get through that.
I play ukulele, I’m ok at reading music and decent at improv. I learned from Walter Piston’s “Harmony” and some of Adam Neely’s videos.
My main phone is a pine phone so if I don’t pick up when you call the battery is probably dead, the modem is probably dead, or I’m currently swearing at calls/pulseaudio/alsa. I’d strongly recommend sending an email instead.
Dispite what my web page says I’ve stopped uploading my scratch projects to GitHub once I started to understand the basics of collaboration with git. I was using the flamegraph as gamification/motivation but it doesn’t work as well with feature branch/squash merge workflows so I just keep most things on my VPS until I’m happy with publishing updates.
