@deutrino Suburbs are the worst: There's less infrastructure and long commutes but without the privacy benefits.
Hey fediverse folk! Is there somewhere a map of federation/defederation of fediverse? I mean which instances see/listen to which other instances (since the relationship is asymmetrical). Does not have to be graphical, but ideally searchable (text files?).
Point is, I suspect my home instance might be blocked by some other instances I am interested in and I have no way to know whether people out there will even see my toots if I speak to them first.
Any explanations and pointers appreciated. Thanks.
@freemo What platform do you use? (if you don't mind me asking.)
@icedquinn @fluffy TIL, that's a neat idea!
Most of my stuff that isn't text files doesn't change much though.
@icedquinn @fluffy Yeah, really ipfs would be perfect if there was an easy way to communicate newer roots for the tree and automatically pin them.
@icedquinn @fluffy I don't think syncthing looks at the contents, I'm pretty sure it just does newest version wins and maybe writes the old version under a different name. That's why I can't just replace it with git, I have 8Gb of random binary files (PDFs, pictures, mod, xm, elf binaries etc) and don't want to keep that in git.
@fluffy @icedquinn rsync doesn't go both ways. for stuff it does work well with git is better anyway.
@fluffy @icedquinn oh wow really? That's a shame. I used it for years with zero problems across over half a dozen different machines with different architectures. All of them ran Linux though. It still runs on two of my machines but I'm holding off on adding it to my newest one because I don't like the memory consumption, I just haven't found a replacement.
@icedquinn @fluffy I mean if you just want to sync stuff there's syncthing, that works extremely well.
@icedquinn @fluffy So far the only thing I've gotten to work is just keeping the strait html in a repo. I got some pretty normal people to edit that through the github UI which is a little surprising.
@icedquinn @lbry I honestly have no idea what will happen.
@icedquinn The best "non-normie" wiki is probably aciidoc or tex2page fed from a git repo.
The #Rust #bootstrap chain has shrinked in #Guix:
https://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/guix.git/commit/?h=core-updates&id=df93fc21a48047988b032ead90b0869491c834c8
In essence, mrustc (a Rust compiler in C++) is now used to build Rust 1.29, instead of 1.19 as was the case before:

@newsbot Yes, that's the idea. Security guards likewise threaten the business of thieves.
@icedquinn @alyx Not worth it.
Also I don't think they have google fiber here, the only alternative is Comcast (which often does do ipv6.)
@alyx @icedquinn Same, the ISP I had in college gave me a whole /64 subnet but now that I live in Reston (so right next to a PoP I think) and have a nicer connection from Verizon I only get one ipv4.
@wizzwizz4 @metalune@fosstodon.org tmux is even nicer.
I usually make a tmux socket in the root of whatever project directory I'm working on so I don't loose track of editor instances.

Email mastodon+swiley@swiley.net (this makes all of my computers beep and turn on an indicator light and is always the fastest way to reach me.) I was on octodon a while ago but abandoned my account. I've never been a member of gab or parlor.
If you’d like to learn to program I would consider the SICP [1] more or less the peak of American CS pedagogy (at least as far as beginners go) along with “The Practice of Programming” once you get through that.
I play ukulele, I’m ok at reading music and decent at improv. I learned from Walter Piston’s “Harmony” and some of Adam Neely’s videos.
My main phone is a pine phone so if I don’t pick up when you call the battery is probably dead, the modem is probably dead, or I’m currently swearing at calls/pulseaudio/alsa. I’d strongly recommend sending an email instead.
Dispite what my web page says I’ve stopped uploading my scratch projects to GitHub once I started to understand the basics of collaboration with git. I was using the flamegraph as gamification/motivation but it doesn’t work as well with feature branch/squash merge workflows so I just keep most things on my VPS until I’m happy with publishing updates.
