@sotolf@fosstodon.org @mplammers@fosstodon.org I think it comes from people that got forced into it by their distros (most popular "plug and play" distros are shipping wayland as the default because of gnome) and don't quite understand what happened, they updated their computer and suddenly half their apps are slow/broken/different.
@tripu Oh really? I've had good experiences with standard ebooks[1] I've been (slowly) going through the Karamozov Brothers.

@tripu IMO: most good books in math and CS are either freely available or priced reasonably enough and have non-abusive publishers so you shouldn't pirate them.
But I loved that site as a student. I could get almost any book on any subject I wanted and didn't have to go to the library for it.
@lucifargundam Yeah stuff installed with guix probably won't show up in any GUI stuff unless maybe you symlink the applications directory from your guix profile into a directory the GUI searches (not a good idea.)
I don't use mobian but there probably aren't updates available? I wouldn't use the GUI tool for installing them though.

Right. Indeed. There are two levels to the world: https://qoto.org/@FailForward/105652797745648749
And the problem with interactions in the digital sphere is exactly the lack of physical reality, body language clues, etc. _If I cannot sense what your acts are, the only heuristic to guess your character are (my interpretations of) your words._ But since words are a one dimensional linear serialisation of the rich and colourful universe in your head, by necessity the character estimate I construct will be largely wrong (as would be any 1D projection of an xD object).
Perhaps the robustness principle would be a good guidance here:
> Be conservative in what you do, be liberal in what you accept from others
> -- Robustness Principle/Wikipedia/https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robustness_principle
It's not exactly tolerance. Benevolence? What's the right human word for this?
@icedquinn Yeah, from what I've read most kids just need more attention from their parents/teachers.
@icedquinn My parents didn't force me to pay attention when they homeschooled me, they dumped the books on my desk and said "do this."
Oh wow! just ... wow...

@garritfra IME it's usually a buildroot where the kernel is launched from u-boot (which is launched from usually the mask rom but sometimes something else, if you want/need to play with that check the SoC documentation.)
u-boot is a huge pain and I would avoid messing with it unless I had a very good reason to.
Anyone selling something running Linux is obligated to provide you with the kernel source code, often there's enough to rebuild the firmware without their application but in some cases there isn't.

@chrichri You can also send sms from finch over ssh, no need for forwarding video.
@rlamacraft Some of us tried too much nutmeg as freshmen and are 100% ok never having it again.
@kzimmermann Early compiz was so cool! You could make the windows jiggle when they moved!
@josh Yikes! The whole reason I opened an account was to renew my domain name when the registrars cc payment form was broken!

@xkcd He clearly hasn't seen the Seinfeld episode where Kramer keeps using Seinfeld's oven as a dryer.

Email mastodon+swiley@swiley.net (this makes all of my computers beep and turn on an indicator light and is always the fastest way to reach me.) I was on octodon a while ago but abandoned my account. I've never been a member of gab or parlor.
If you’d like to learn to program I would consider the SICP [1] more or less the peak of American CS pedagogy (at least as far as beginners go) along with “The Practice of Programming” once you get through that.
I play ukulele, I’m ok at reading music and decent at improv. I learned from Walter Piston’s “Harmony” and some of Adam Neely’s videos.
My main phone is a pine phone so if I don’t pick up when you call the battery is probably dead, the modem is probably dead, or I’m currently swearing at calls/pulseaudio/alsa. I’d strongly recommend sending an email instead.
Dispite what my web page says I’ve stopped uploading my scratch projects to GitHub once I started to understand the basics of collaboration with git. I was using the flamegraph as gamification/motivation but it doesn’t work as well with feature branch/squash merge workflows so I just keep most things on my VPS until I’m happy with publishing updates.
