My OS decision problem (Ubentu, Debian, Mint, Pop! OS, other) is nothing compared to another dilemma – how to heat the house we're slowly starting to finish. Heat pump? PV Electric? Wood?

@szescstopni boy, we live in Poland. According to the tradition you should choose the most primitive installation running on worst type of coal. The coal sludge with phosphorus and sulfur over the scale. And trash. That's the standard.

@szescstopni after 3 years of wood burning - not the best idea. It's either too hot or too cold, storage is a big issue, you have to bring it home and it's heavy, it's hard to keep it dry and it's just sad to destroy the trees.

My dream is a ground heat pump powered from PV, but that's probably most expensive option.

Mad scientist way would be to build DIY heat pump out of old fridge, tho not sure how well would that work in real life.

@jaks I'll keep a small wood stove for emergencies, hoping to never use it. Ground source would be the best

@szescstopni small stove made out of thick steel seems to be a bit more efficient. We have one in the kitchen, and rest are 100 years old ceramic stoves - those are terrible.

But yeah, emergency off grid heating is definitely a good idea, especially as heat pumps are not that great when it gets really cold.

@jaks Apparently well-installed heat pumps manage even in very low temperatures. But emergency heating is necessary, Our new "koza" is doing very well – not warm enough to live in the new house, but enough to work there.
