Apropos of um nothing, putting rules in place that lots of people violate routinely can create a backlash—but if you only enforce them when it serves your interests and ignore most violations, then there’s often little backlash and you get nice cover for going after people you don’t like.
Used commonly during Jim Crow, against people struggling to survive on the street, in the “War on Drugs” and tbh by cops generally, by corps to fight unions, and now by a certain social media site.
The writers at Merriam-Webster really do put out pure gold sometimes:
“We define irregardless, even though this act hurts the feelings of many. Why would a dictionary do such a thing? Do we enjoy causing pain? Have we abdicated our role as arbiter of all that is good and pure in the English language? These are all excellent questions (well, these are all questions)…”

Much like parents, they take care of us, then we take care of them.
We love them forever. ❤️❤️❤️
There is an entire world of small and mid-sized businesses that are absolutely helpless in front of the kinds of attacks that we call "basic" in infosec. Invoice spearphishing, BEC, credential harvesting - these are the kinds of things we think of as entry-level hacks.
Ok, I'm a little angry here. I've heard a dozen stories this year from professional services providers like accountants and lawyers and MSPs about the jargon, contempt, and expense from enterprise product companies and infosec consultancies.
I'd like to challenge each person here: can you talk to your bookkeeper, day care provider, personal trainer, housekeeper (really, any person whose job is actively being replaced by the gig economy) and find out if their business has implemented 2FA? If they don't understand what you're talking about, can you explain it clearly and helpfully enough that they're happy to become the internal advocate at their SMB for more security?
If you can, thanks. If you can't, ask yourself and your company and your community: what are we doing to protect the half of American workers who don't work at enterprises large enough to force security measures and profitable enough to pay for them?
Squirrel drama in three acts, only caught by chance. The left one was yelling at the other. That one suddenly turned on its back and kicked up snow with his hind legs towards the yeller. Then all hell broke loose as the snow was right on target in yeller's face 😂 .
They too have their little problems.

New #newsletter alert! You may have heard about the New Jersey #bear hunt.
What if I told you that in fact almost every eastern state has one, and that they probably don't really work for what they are designed to do? https://tinyletter.com/BBrookshire/letters/goin-on-a-bear-hunt-in-jersey
Time ago, the now scary bird site, was useful for science, knowledge building, hazard communication, etc...
We wrote a paper on that: Rapid collaborative knowledge building via Twitter after significant geohazard events.
Polite reminder, mastodon users with visual impairments went to a lot of trouble getting people to use the alternative text description facility on image uploads. Spending energy over the past 5 years reminding people in the kindest ways to caption images. Please lets not lose that ethos. There are so many photos without alternative text captions now. It isn't difficult to do, and only takes a little effort to develop the habit. #image #Caption

In June “Sci Phi Journal” published my piece on right-wing science fiction in Poland. It is not academic per se but it’s grounded in the research I’ve carried out for my PhD (and for the resulting book).
If you’re interested, you’ll find the text here: https://www.sciphijournal.org/index.php/2022/06/28/a-very-short-history-of-right-wing-science-fiction-in-poland/
