In the 1970s when someone was hired to complete an ecological inventory of a park, they were given 2 rolls of b&w film, & a contact sheet* of the photos was included in the back of the report. Before the days of autofocus, & one's ability to determine the correct shutter speed and aperture was limited. Times have changed.

*a contact sheet is created when the film negatives are placed on to photo paper, and exposed to light for a few seconds. Each photo would only be 35mm. Get out our hand lens.

My kid’s teacher made toys for her class based on their drawings.

My spouse, a 4th grade teacher, is suffering from #LongCovid after twice getting infected in their classroom.

This happened because our school district keeps allowing sick kids to show up & stay in school without testing, and because it refuses to acknowledge the poor ventilation. Masks aren't required, vax isn't required, no one's testing, ventilation is atrocious, classrooms are crowded.

We're actively seeking an investigative reporter to help us spread the word.

Can anyone please help us?

@Heathercawte Hi, Heather. Right now I'm mostly tooting our dogs, but I hope to write some serious stuff too. Remain :)

@miksha Hi, Ron. Bees are one of the things we wanted but decided against – we live in an area so remote from beehives that there are practically no Apis melifera around, and introducing them could be disastrous for our wild pollinators.

Sometimes, my dad sends me random photos that he finds in his archive. I find this sweet and this way I sometimes get reminded of nice memories. This morning, my dad sent me this poster. 😂 it must be 15 years old? I *think* it was part of Polish #Greenpeace’s campaign to save one of the last European primordial forests. I’ve forgotten all about this event.

We used to get naked for the cause™️ really, really often back in those days, whether it made sense or not. 😅

The new lab is taking shape.
Still empty, but in the new year hopefully some interesting #electrochemistry will happen here.

I'm always amazed at the talent of past dissection drawings by microscope-biologists: this bee by Pfurtscheller dates to 1902.

My argument, at its core, is that to do that, we need to teach people why science deserves their trust – and this requires teaching how science works as a social institution. I've written about this in brief in a Science American article: scientificamerican.com/article

Science education in an age of twitter disinformation

tl;dr — Science education needs to adapt to a world of misinformation on social media and beyond. Today, prominent antivaxxer Robert F. Kennedy Jr. tweeted the ridiculous claim that as director of the NIAID, Dr. Fauci bought the silence of the entire worldwide virology community by handing out research grants. Elon Musk then affirmed and amplified his claim.

Hello world,

I've migrated to the archaeo.social server, so time for a pinned #Mastodon #Introduction!

I'm an #archaeologist whose research focuses on #AncientGreek animals from the landscape to the altar to the plate. To do so, I study the bones and teeth from ancient #animals.

It's a mixture of humanities and science: history and art meets biomolecules and skeletal anatomy

I believe that #archaeology is relevant to our own world and we need to be #inclusive (alt-text added now)

Remember #Frostodon? This was only 4 days ago, -10⁰C. Now, 14⁰C, massive temperature difference. Burst pipes all over, schools shut, families off work. In the same year as hottest summer on record.

Extreme weather events symptomatic of #ClimateEmergency, need to look at critical infrastructure (water, food, transport, education, power etc) & push for #ClimateResilience. This includes #gardening for #wildlife, using #NativePlants & #WildFlowers

I got delivered the non-working DS Lite I bought on eBay. The screens are in pristine condition but the battery is leaking. The motherboard had extensive damage because of the battery issue. Good news is the DS lite got all the replacement parts it needed and now is working perfectly #RightToRepair.

The lid on the pringles isn’t there to keep them fresh but to preserve the illusion that one day you’ll have self control

In the 90s at the Air and Space Museum in DC they had this PC rocket simulator game where you built a rocket and launched it. I can't find any references to it on the internet, but if anyone who remembers it knows anything about it or is better at Google than I am please let me know!
