I just heard that the 16th European Symposium for the
Protection of the Night Sky will take place next year in Groningen, the Netherlands, from Thursday 14 to Saturday 16 March, 2024.

It's a fantastic meeting which mixes together activists, academics, and lighting professionals. If you've never been to one, come join us!

Hey telecom nerds!

Back in September, I stumbled across a record of background music from 1986 with a #Telecom theme, and I asked if I should buy it. Well, I found myself near that record shop earlier today, and managed to find it again (can you believe nobody else bought it?!).

It's as groovy as you'd expect it to be. It's a vibe. You can listen to it for yourself at youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1Z

February 2026: the UK blocks all non-UK websites in the name of “child protection”. Or “anti-terrorism”. No-one is sure, as the notes are in Dropbox, which is now blocked, and the ministerial discussion was on WhatsApp, which ministers used because it was end to end encrypted and which they blocked because it was end to end encrypted.

The UK’s official Mastodon instance is launched with the slogan “A British site for British people”, forgetting Northern Ireland.

Not so fast what about the day Windows ME released

Straszne huki w okolicy. Pewnie jakiś początkujący rolnik nieumiejętnie wysadza ziemniaki.

I guess I should have waited with this picture for , but I could have forgotten to post it and it would be lost on my disk for all eternity.

Please give a warm welcome to my employer, Ars Technica, for joining us here at Mastodon by following them. :) @arstechnica

“Wikipedia will not perform #OnlineSafetyBill age checks”

I had a long chat with Chris at the BBC about this, wondering how many other popular sites will be stifled or incentivised to abandon UK users.

Quite amazing to think that a reference tool like an encyclopaedia might be compelled to check its users’ papers, and that there are still some people saying that this is fine.
