In memory to my friend Denis "Tan" Zhmakin, medic at Armed Forces of #Ukraine, who died at Khromove forward positions north of #Bakhmut on 22 April. We first met years ago in godforsaken Tyzyl valley in Northern #Caucasus where he drove for mountaineering trips from his home town of Berdyansk, and I was doing caving reconnaissance. As we were both attracted by the spirit of Caucasus, we kept in touch and occasionally met in the mountains. As the war started, "Tan" went into volunteering organizations, then worked as volunteer medic, then joined AFU full-time as a medic. For the last year I was supplying them with whatever specialized treatment items they needed like hypothermia kits last winter, radios etc. Sadly, we won't have a drink in Kyiv together any more but the defense work continues — for every AFU soldier on the front line there's hundreds of people worldwide who care and help whatever way they can.

Missed the exciting news that the boffins at NASA JPL have figured out a way to use reserve power to keep using all the scientific instruments on board Voyager 2 for even longer. For a mission that only had a requirement to last until about 1982, job well done. jpl.nasa.gov/news/nasas-voyage

Several years ago, I wrote extensively about space probes, including *six* articles about or involving the Voyager probes! glog.glennf.com/blog/2017/8/4/

One of the thins I really like about #Mastodon (at the moment?) is that posts have a long after-life; people are clearly using #hashtags to explore issues, and posts are being boosted days after originally posting; this is good as there was always the feeling at the other place that if people weren't looking there & then, a post would disappear into the ether... now they have a longer life there's (even) more incentive to make sure you craft your reflections well - which is good!

Please Reblog to get this to those who can use it.... I'm not sure when my couch became a pet bed but it has. It's nice I can provide them with such luxuries... 🎩

@rysiek Yes, I do. Because I *am* the sole admin and mod, and thus actually need to do stuff to keep this running ;)

I hear instance admins and moderators "keep people hostage" on this here fedi. At least that's what some people commenting on my BlueSky-related blogpost keep claiming. Somehow always in a "free speech" context. :thaenkin:

Anyone feeling taken hostage by their admins/moderators?

I just saw a toot that talked about “when they write the history of the rise of fascism in 2023”, and while this isn’t about that specific person, and thus not a subtoot, I feel obligated to obliterate that statement.

Firstly, because ‘rise’ is a misnomer. It is part of the lie we tell ourselves. Fascism never went away, it just sort of faded into the background as the jackbooted thugs shed their uniforms, and merged back into society.

Secondly, if we are talking about anything that could perhaps be called a ‘resurgence’, and you have been paying attention, you know that this has been going on for years.

Decades.

What do you mean the clock on the stove is wrong? It’s easy, you just substract 5 hours and 47 minutes to get the actual time.

Driving out to Victor Bay last night after supper, the light was magical. This photo doesn’t do it justice. My sharp intake of breath probably conveyed it better. #Nunavut #Arctic

This section of the LA River is typically so low that it's more like large puddles on the concrete.

But the rain came so intensely this year that we had deeper, rushing water here (taken from the 6th street bridge) AND moss flourished along the riverbed.

Water levels are receding now... and thus #mosstodon

Steps for making clothes from a tried-and-true pattern:

1. Me (makes a thing from a pattern): "ah this is a little bit wrong, should remember to alter this piece next time"
2. Time passes
3. Me (makes a thing from a pattern): "ah, yes, I remember, this is a little bit wrong, should remember to alter this piece next time"
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until the heat-death of the universe.
