In rural Australia in the 1940s, my mother had rocks thrown at her and was branded a 'communist' because her father, a school headmaster, advocated for establishing a public library.

In the Canadian province where I now reside, the Catholic Church controlled libraries -- and thus access to information -- until the 1960s.

We forget how recent the democratisation of knowledge is -- how transformative such institutions were and how hard-won.

We should not part with them easily.

I'll have a blog entry about it soon, but before then, you get to hear about it first: A full transfer of the USC Cinema sound effects library, which includes the work of Sunset Editorial and their hundreds of sound effects.

I did study for the Manitoba archives in the late 1990s on how they could maintain their collection in this digital age.

Fortunately, 1 recommendation was that they update the study every decade to track technical and social changes, because we missed this one.😀

Their oldest physical documents were 400 years old; they wanted advice on that timescale.

"If you really want to help native wild bees:

Don’t keep hives, keep flowers. Wildflowers. This will mean you will ultimately keep native wild bees.

... Don’t spray poisons on your patch and forget neat and tidy – it’s so last century."

Put the outdoor camera by pond and caught all kinds of birds getting a drink and then this squirrel, who got spooked by something.

This means that in a few days we'll have crab or chicken for lunch, we just have to decide which common name of Laetiporus sulphureus we will use: crab-of-the-woods or chicken-of-the-woods. Or, if we want to go satanic, sulphur shelf.

Here is a fun little meadow I embroidered as a gift for my brother using yarn from our late Mom’s stash.

New work just dropped in MIT Sloan Management Review. We surveyed American office workers and found men were more likely to report that their organizations reward employees for supporting one another, even though women reported supporting colleagues more often. Want to guess the biggest correlate of job satisfaction? We call for an equitable return on social investment.
