The “automatically remove books from the school library when a parent objects” movement in one quote:

nuclear energy is the most expensive and dangerous form of energy when you calculate everything

That sounds intuitive, but as often was proven false when you actually calculate everything:

Total environmental impact of #nuclear power is one of the lowest among all electricity sources (UNECE, 2020), lower even than most renewables.
Cost of electricity generation for nuclear is in the lower range too, comparable with wind onshore and utility-scale PV (NEA 2020)

While this may sound counterintuitive, and certainly contradicts the popular picture, there are good physical and economical reasons for both facts:

Very low energy density of #renewables means you need plenty of them to produce the same amount of electricity as a small nuclear power plant produces. To build plenty of renewables, you need plenty of land surface and then plenty of materials which need to be mined and processed. This results in their environmental impact being actually quite high.
Utility-scale PV is an (obvious) attempt to concentrate electricity generation to improve efficiency, which is why utility-scale PV is comparable with nuclear in cost of generation. But in contract, rooftop PV is much more expensive, simply because is distributed and requires plenty of redundant infrastructure (cabling, inverters etc) and none of these come for free.
Onshore wind is comparable in price with nuclear but uses one resource that is completely non-renewable: land surface. The nature of onshore wind generation requires that you build turbines in elevated and windy places, which usually points at remote locations like forests or hills, which most people want to preserve rather than turn into industrial wind farms.
Off-shore wind doesn’t face these restrictions, but at the same time anything built on sea is way more expensive and has short lifetime, which is reflected in its higher cost of generation.

I very much recommend this study by UNECE (2020) as it’s very much an eye opener on the holistic approach to environmental impacts of electricity generation:

@q3k must have an empty, dedicated room? Why not just have a minimum income requirement 🤣

TIL that the EU (EPSO) has joined the bandwagon of discriminatory, privacy-invading 'remotely proctored tests':

✓ Recent macOS/Windows and Chrome only
✓ Must give your data and admin access to your computer to some random US company

The babies are doing well and growing pleasingly chubby. They are venturing farther and farther from the burrow and love wrestling in the dirt 😁

I have to admire the Chief of Police Scotland going on the record and saying the force is institutionally racist and sexist, hopefully they'll do something about it

The US Supreme Court Clean Water Act decision could be disastrous for wetland protection - and therefore for our nation's flood risks and water quality. The continuous surface test ignores the physical / hydrologic realities of wetlands.

How about go screw yourselves, anybody who does this might as well just outright say “please let us grab more metadata from you before you can use basic security features”.

Seeing the Clean Water Act gutted is devastating. I'm old enough to remember what waterways were like before the Clean Water Act, choked with industrial sludge and pollution. Wetlands are critical habitats, that once destroyed, can't be easily restored. They're also important carbon sinks to help mediate climate change. In so many ways this will be remembered as a dark day in history.

I thought using loops was cheating, so I programmed my own using samples. I then thought using samples was cheating, so I recorded real drums. I then thought that programming it was cheating, so I learned to play drums for real. I then thought using bought drums was cheating, so I learned to make my own. I then thought using premade skins was cheating, so I killed a goat and skinned it. I then thought that that was cheating too, so I grew my own goat from a baby goat. I also think that is cheating, but I’m not sure where to go from here. I haven’t made any music lately, what with the goat farming and all.
