My last company, a #Boulder startup, was acquired by a #PE firm and they spent a whole day telling us how they were unlike other Private Equity stories.

Then they cut costs, made the place unbearable to work in and lost all the best people.

Can't imagine their infrastructure is any better with a bunch of interns running the place, but I bet they aren't saying that to investors.

#PrivateEquity is *quite* a racket. #PE managers pile up other peoples' money - pension funds, plutes, other pools of money - and then "invest" it (buying businesses, loading them with debt, cutting wages, lowering quality and setting traps for customers). For this, they get an annual fee - 2% - of the money they manage, and a bonus for any profits they make.

TL;DR:

Facebook pracuje nad usprawnieniami do protokołu ActivityPub. Dzięki temu protokołowi instancje fediwersum mogą się ze sobą komunikować (Mastodon z innym Mastodonem, Pixelfedem czy Lemmym).

"Co z tego" zapytacie. Ano spójrzcie chociażby na Google Chrome. Sytuacja jest identyczna. Google lata temu też wyczaił otwarty silnik przeglądarki, zaczął wrzucać do niego usprawnienia, a z czasem zrobił się tam Gugla prywatny folwark i teraz Chrome jest hegemonem praktycznie nie do obalenia. Zadajcie sobie pytanie, czy chcemy, by Facebook był takim samym hegemonem. Więcej w źródełku.

Dodam tylko od siebie, że takich sytuacji, gdzie oddolne inicjatywy są mordowane przez korporacje albo polityków jest przecież cała masa - nawet niekoniecznie w świecie technologii. Nie zrozumcie mnie źle - wsparcie korporacji czy nawet (ha tfu) polityków w różnych przedsięwzięciach może się opłacać, bo często bez finansowania wiele projektów by umarło. Jednak takim instytucjom trzeba patrzeć na ręce i każdy ich ruch obserwować z pięciu perspektyw. A już na pewno nie pozwolić im na samowolkę.
