Multiple bright, young scientists I know have told me they will not be applying to jobs in TX & FL.
Faculty friends at institutions in these states have shared they are having trouble recruiting new students & concerned about what they could be accused of.
Having spent years working at UT Austin where I loved our weird & welcoming community, I’m deeply troubled watching things fall apart. https://www.texastribune.org/2023/07/25/texas-a-m-professor-opioids-dan-patrick/
I started an account at BlueSky because so many other academic #philosophers had signed up, but there is even less activity than here.
I'm especially interested in #GreekPhilosophy but also #philosophyofmind and #metaphysics.
Any others out there?
I live in rural Tassie about 20 minutes South of Hobart. I say "rural" but it's really middle class. Lots of horses. One bloke grows tea. A few bee hives, pizza ovens, two cars in the garage. The bloke across the road is a lawyer, next door a psychologist...trying to paint a picture.
There's a Facebook page called the Place Name Community Group.
It used to be "Does anybody have a ram that could service my three ewes please?" or "Can anyone recommend a good plumber please?". But lately...
"White four wheel drive acting suspiciously down Suchnsuch Rd" and "Blue hatchback seen casing properties near the bridge."
One time, the "suspicious vehicle" was a mother and daughter who had come to pick up fish tank fish I was giving away.
It was a bit dented and scratched.
I'm sure you see what I'm saying here. 🙄
Państwo z Ożarowa się nie popisali podczas lokalizowania amerykańskiej książki dla dzieci.
W ogóle co za absurd że ktoś takie książki lokalizuje z USA. Rozumiem kupić format i uzupełnić treścią dopasowaną do kraju wydania. A tutaj jakieś pytania do dziecka czy widziało homara amerykańskiego.
Dobrze że nie dodali treści audio bo pewnie by były poprzestawiane akcenty.
Capitalism hates it when you fix and repair things you bought. https://pluralistic.net/2023/07/24/rent-to-pwn/ by @pluralistic
Nie wiedziałem. Poducenci samochodów wykupują nowe pralki, zabierają z nich chipy by wmontować je do swoich do samochodów, a zdebogacone pralki po prostu wyrzucają. https://pluralistic.net/2023/07/24/rent-to-pwn/
@Angle @IPEdmonton @pluralistic When I canceled my dead father's HP ink subscription I was told the cartridge in it would no longer work because they would remotely disable it.
HP also then charged me the $6 that was overdue three times which I had to fix out of principal 4 months later when I discovered it.
Needless to say I will never have anything to do with HP. Ever.
Is asafoetida the poor cousin to the long lost silphion of the ancients?

Beavers are ace hydrologists—and great allies in preventing wildfires.
"Beavers banished to a remote Idaho valley have transformed the landscape into a lush wetland and a haven against fire and drought, satellite images show."

A headline I just saw: "What We Lose if We Lose Twitter--
Twitter’s destruction would be a geopolitical catastrophe not only for the United States but also for the democratic world"
...I see this sentiment out there and it's really sad and concerning that ppl are so dependent on one social media platform.

Misuse of power in research. It's a huge problem in Germany.
I've observed it many times. At all institutions that I worked at.
My observations are consistent with a new documentary by @ZDF
Speak German? -> watch it: https://www.zdf.de/dokumentation/die-spur/diespur-metoo-machtmissbrauch-tatort-uni-102.html
Here's a post I recently wrote about misuse of power and my personal struggles with it (no connection to the documentary):

In numerical terms, this must be one of the biggest corrections ever made by a newspaper.

Powody żeby zachować rozróżnienie pisowni ⟨h⟩/⟨ch⟩:
1. W wymowie jakichś sześciu (słownie: 6) stuletnich dziadków z Podlasia faktycznie różnią się brzmieniem
2. Pozwala odróżnić zapożyczenia łacińskie od germańskich i słowiańskich (aha, no to fajnie)
3. Niesie informację, że celownik od nazwiska Sapieha to „Sapieże”, a nie „Sapiesze” (gość był seksualnym drapieżcą)
4. Pozwala odróżnić przedwcześnie zmarłego syna patriarchy Teracha od miasta, do którego on sam się przeprowadził (ok, valid)
