Six weeks ago, the rosinweed flowers stood tall above the foot-high grass - now they are barely visible. Tallgrass Prairies covered much if the Midwest where woodland systems transitioned to grasslands. Relying on regular fires and occasional intense grazing to maintain their biodiversity, they now usually require human intervention for maintenance.
All the rain we've had means any bucket or container outside eventually fills up with water. Passed by one the wife used to bathe a chicken (long story) a while back and noticed movement. Those are mosquito larvae, aren't they?
@JStatePost @CliffWade That actually raises an interesting point when it comes to bootable media durability.
USB media can be really convenient, but what about media used for hardware level recovery, especially if it's not needed for years at a time? I'd trust a decent quality DVD-R over a USB drive to be functional if I need it several years after initially writing to the media.
I'd be fine, using a secondary machine to prep fresh media if required, but not everyone has a second machine.
#TIL that #GDR (East #Germany, #DDR) still exists. Well, in a way.
In early '70s Fidel Castro visited GDR. There was much kissing and hugging, and then leaders went on to serious business. Namely, #Cuba got access to GDR state-owned company Nordsternzucker VEB Halle, for re-export of Cuban sugar, and GDR... well, GDR got an island. Ernst-Thälmann-Insel, formerly Cayo Blanco del Sur.
Formally uninhabited, the island got one citizen, Ernst Thälmann himself, in form of a stone bust. A German singer Frank Schöbel recorded song “Insel im Golf von Cazones” (Island in Cazones Bay) there, and that would be it.
Twenty-something years later, Germany has reunited. Unification treaty was long, boring and detailed as only Germans can do.
It does not mention the island.
So, it was never “reunited” with West Germany and thus should remain the last GDR territory. Unfortunately, Cuba's stance now is that the gift was “purely symbolic” and GDR, well, does not feel well enough to put any claims...

"Gdyby to trzecie pytanie referendalne rozłożyć na techniki propagandy, cały tekst by powstał. 🤦🤦
1. Syndrom oblężonej twierdzy - budzenie poczucia zagrożenia
2. Hiperbola (wyolbrzymienie)
3. Podprogowe argumentum in terrorem (wykorzystanie strachu)
4. Celowe niejasności.
5. Dyktat (użycie słów, które wskazują, jaką decyzję należy podjąć)
6. Dysfemizm (zastęp. słowa neutralnego nacechowanym negatywnie)
7. Półprawda
8. Nadmierne uproszczenie
@helenczerski during the oil crisis in the 1970s, The Netherlands decreed carless Sundays. Old friends still talk about going roller skating on the motorway as children
This is a great story. "It must have been in one of my last years, after I'd been there long enough to know how to beat Princeton at its own game. By hook or by crook, I was going to stop John Nash from smoking outside my office." https://numberlandadventures.blogspot.com/2023/08/how-i-got-john-nash-to-stop-smoking-in.html
