Google: "We are protecting you from the evil actors in the middle".
Me: "uh...."

Google Chrome (making ad blocking hard) > ----- (bad guys?) ---- < Google Ad Trackers < Other Ad Trackers < Website

Chrome: We're going to make adblocking on mobile even harder.

Firefox: We're gonna make adblocking on mobile as easy as its ever been.

Gee, wonder which one I'm gonna be using after this.

Just looked up how to make reservations at a rural restaurant. They don’t use online reservation services so Google offered to have Google Assistant call the restaurant for me. I let it. A few minutes later Google texted me that the reservation is confirmed. That’s a bit creepy. Did the restaurant know it was talking to a robot? Was the robot nice?

I feel like someone must have done this terrible #linguistics joke before, but I've never actually seen it.

It hadn’t occurred to me before, but there is now no question in my mind that ChatGPT is a “him”.

King was accused of inciting violence, through his civil disobedience being pretty much as bad as "violent" reading contemporary news accounts is eye opening.

The idea the King was remarkable & successful because he was "non violent" is a modern retcon.

If a few people do something violent at a protest planned to be a peaceful is it a "violent protest?"

It depends on if it's news from last week's of BLM ... or an attempt to shoehorn King into the US history template.

Twitter “created a sense of community for scientists, particularly for those from under-represented groups. It gave a voice to researchers about issues such as harassment and unequal pay, and served as an organizing point for scientists of colour to speak out against inequity.” nature.com/articles/d41586-023

Just a reminder that any device with a sealed-in battery is disposable by design

Any archivists/museums who wish to preserve smartphones for the future must remove the batteries NOW

They swell up and are ultimately fire hazards

Storm damage left us with an excess of wisteria and trumpet vines from an area of downed trees, so we decided to make lemonade with our four days of power outage and see what we could do with them. Behold one wreath, ready to be decorated. Or maybe just left as is. Not sure yet. Think it will help ward off demons? 😁

Every time I walk through the dining room I grin at this. If art is supposed to bring joy, my latest piece is a total success.

Thanks again to @arose62 for the idea :)

All I wanted to say is that Twitter has never been as important a community for #science as some would have it since it mostly attracted English-language Western scientists. And we shouldn’t give in to social media FOMO because there’s more contents than our brains can process and that’s ok. Apparently these were hot enough takes 🤔😅 nature.com/articles/d41586-023

Imagine having the confidence of a cat. Just show up at people's houses. Lie down, make yourself at home. Wait for someone to bring dinner.

Make a racket if they don't.

If they can't be trained? Bounce. Keep going till you find someone who understands your many needs. Including growing your favorite drugs (fresh nip! never freeze dried!) and giving you full body massages.

The layoffs should have convinced everybody that tech execs are incompetent. There is no scenario where a CEO saying “I hired all these people and now am firing 15% of the whole company” doesn’t mean that they’re too incompetent to safely do their job.

Either they massively over-hired, possibly compromising the company’s structure and viability, or they massively over-fired, possibly compromising the company’s structure and viability.

Why these execs still have jobs is beyond me

You could see ChatGPT crying if you knew Polish. Yes, there are no countries that begin with K in Africa. Congo (pl: Kongo, both of them), Cameroon (Kamerun), Kenya (Kenia). A wonderful thread, but in Polish floss.social/@tomo/11089822206

W świetle ostatnich heheszków z afrykańskimi krajami na K postanowiłem skonsultować sprawę z ChatGPT.

If the idea of violent protests don't make you at least little scared I wonder how well you know history. At the same time, real change almost never happens without people putting their bodies on the line.

The right understands this far better than your average liberal/moderate. To be a moderate is to trust that existing systems will (mostly) work.

If those system fail? What then? To even consider this is moderate treason.
