#Andalucian #Donkeys and friends!

There are only a few hundred of this ancient species remaining - they're thought to be descended from Egyptian donkeys brought to #Spain 3,000 years ago, and they're the oldest donkey species in #Europe. They're unique here for the pale coat they acquire as adults.

Sancho Panza of Don Quixote fame had a donkey that was probably Andalucian (judging from Cervantes' choice of the word "rucio" for the color of the donkey's coat).

They're sweet and smart, their coats are soft, and they fully deserve to be put back to work where they will prosper. Mechanization of farm labor put them out of a job and the species, used to human care, has declined greatly in numbers.

For now, this reserve outside #Granada is a safe and loving place for them, and they occasionally offer therapy to autistic folks and people with eating disorders.
