You can say Substack should host Nazis, but don't pretend there's some "free speech" principle to it. Substack has a strict ban on pornography. Welcoming Nazis while banning sex workers isn't a principled stand, it's a choice, an expression that you like the former and dislike the latter.

@chris_e_simpson @nbou @aras Ploum wrote a great article about it. ploum.net/2023-06-23-how-to-ki

It happened before, and given how Meta behaved since then there really is zero reason to trust them now. Also, federating means throwing your users data to them; not really something you'd want either. As Stallman once said (and he was completely right): "Facebook isn't a social media website. It's a surveillance engine."

Jurors recommend death penalty based on certain looks, but new training can correct the bias

> Certain facial features—like downturned lips and a heavy brow—are known to make someone appear untrustworthy to others, even though these do not indicate a person's actual character. Such facial biases influence our everyday social interactions as well as high-stakes decisions, including who we hire, or elect to political office.

Note: Wearing a mask or staying home when you are sick means we need government leadership and structural supports to encourage people to do that. That means providing N95 masks for free and increasing paid sick days.

Storage bench? My dudes, that is a telephone seat. It goes in the hall. Your telephone sits on the table, with the wire draped down and plugged into the wall. Your two phone books go in the opening.

I used to be enthusiastic about technology.

Was a teen when people made homepages. I could talk to people around the world.

Mobile phones were neat. You could text your friends.

Then with smart phones you could practice language and play genuinely innovative games for a couple of bucks.

I can't remember the last time I was genuinely excited by tech. Maybe it's a factor of becoming a jaded old piece of shit.

We discussed ecological footprints in class this week, starting with nations and ending today with our own. These are tough conversations for teenagers. Especially rural teenagers.

One of the world’s longest-running experiments has been going for 144 years!

In 1879, botanist William Beal wanted to study how long buried seeds would remain viable. He buried bottles w different seeds in a secret spot on Michigan State's campus.

Every 20 yrs, a small group scientists dig up the bottles & seeds continue to germinate 🌱 (My husband @DavidLowry is the one on the right).

The paper from their last dig is now out so this #science story is back in the news. usatoday.com/story/news/nation

Working on a product for academic geologists, "Geology from Elsewhere". There are more than 200 geology and other earth sciences journals, challenging enough for scientists to keep up with. But some really important articles are published in general science journals (e.g., Nature ) or in journals that we don't associate with geology. As I already monitor oodles of journals across multiple fields, I can spot these outliers and bring them to your attention. Does this sound useful?

@revk oh noes... how will the under 16s recover his WhatsApp messages now... 🤭
