TIL: #German "verfranzen" 'to lose one's way' comes from early airplane flight jargon, with proper name "Franz" used to refer to the navigator.

I want Firefox to succeed more than ever and I support Mozilla finding better revenue sources than search engine default sales, but I do not support a $7M salary for its CEO.
I canceled my recurring donation to Mozilla because I need that money more than Mozilla’s CEO needs that money.
If there is a direct funding option of developers working on Firefox, I will happily reallocate that money. Send me links.
The information below shows how money creates money while policies do not take care of the rest.
Nobody can fully conceptualize how enormously much a billion US$ is.
Therefore this also shows that there is a level of richness that is beyond insane.

mh, selfcare, burnout mention
So, I had this burnout last year. Regardless how ironic it seems, I was quite fortunate, as I was going to the therapy already. So, at least, the burden of moving my ass to take care about myself was already behind me. Then, after half year, I've recovered enough to get back to work. And again, I was quite lucky. The new project has been commissioned. And somehow it has happened I've become the leader of this project. It was just a serendipity, because it was not particularly intended by any involved party. Our product owner was on vacation, our scrum master was on vacation, some decisions needed to be made, and apart from me in the project there were two guys on the level somewhere between junior and regular. So, I took the matters in my hands and I liked it. So, even when PO and SM had returned, I was still responsible for the project. It had gave me a sense of agency. And I had so fucking needed it. I used it as a coping mechanism. Even abused sometimes, during workaholic streaks. Then discussed that with my therapist. Well, "discussed" seems to be a big word. As the feedback I've got from him was more in line: "that's good you are aware about what's happening to you", and we've moved on. Anyway, it was my pet project. It has helped me to stand on my own legs. To have agency again. But it ends.
We had a scope and a deadline. We have made a release with all tasks from the scope just before the Xmas Eve. Since January the project is passed for the maintenance to the other team. Also, I am changing allegiance as well - since January I am moving to another department for another project. Which is going to be dull, less challenging and giving less satisfaction. It is hardly going to be my pet project.
And then the realisation came: perhaps I should made myself as my pet project? Considering all the negligence I was doing to myself for years, it seems like a proper project. With a lot of different aspects to manage. However, there is one problem. I am a perfectionist. I am trying to keep it curbed, but I still am the one. Regarding the software, I am experienced software engineer and I know how to make a decent quality software. But taking care for myself is not something I have an experience in. Quite contrary - I have a lot of experience of neglecting myself. I could be a professional coach about neglecting yourself. So, a project for taking care about myself is going to be quite a challenge.
Anyway. I know what is going to be the next item to tackle on the therapy. Fucking perfectionism.
The "news" that Pizza Hut is firing their delivery drivers because California is raising their minimum wage is such an obvious PR lie that I'm disgusted. Fun fact: in 2015 one of the quoted franchises was sued for failing to reimburse their drivers. https://skepchick.org/2023/12/pizza-hut-is-lying-theyre-not-firing-their-drivers-because-of-a-minimum-wage-hike/
When someone says, “I can’t manage my team effectively if we’re all remote,” they’re right—and also, they can leave off the “if we’re all remote” and still be right.
Zosia update: we prepared a cosy cage for that poor little exhausted dog, with blankets, and a bowl of water. Checked on her an hour later: she *lifted* the cage (which had no bottom), crawled out, and started roaming the house. Found the food we prepared for her for tomorrow, ate it all. She's a monster. We're afraid that during the night she'll tear down one of the house walls, escape into the boggy forest and make her kingdom there. I'm sorry for all the wild animals, especially the wolves and the moose. They stand no chance against her.
So Zosia will spend the next few days in a safe place, will get her medicines, and then we have no idea what will happen. But I'm sure some new catastrophe will happen. Right now our water heater started leaking badly and we have to find a new one ASAP. I guess this means that our last car will break down tomorrow :)
There are no decent animal shelters in the area, so we had to find something. I called my wife and told her what was going on.
– All right – she said.
We don't have space for a sick stray dog in our tiny house – our four dogs would go crazy. But we do have a larger house, still under construction, and we finally bought a wood stove a few weeks ago.
The vet showed us two deep punctures in the upper part of the leg, most probably a dog bite. We have a suspect – an aggressive dog from a nearby village that often walks to our hamlet – but no proof. Doesn't matter. The dog was given painkillers and antibiotics, the wounds didn't qualify for stitching (deep, but stitches would not help much an be a potential risk)
He followed the dog and told me where she decided to lie on the grass. I got there, and it was a sorry sight. She was lying in the grass on the side of the road, not moving, growling weakly when I tried to get close.
