Winter in our house includes figuring out what the ladybugs are doing. They sneak inside late fall, somehow, and the reminder of winter will find them doing ladybug things like circling the rim of a water glass for a few hours or dropping into your latte just as you finish making it.
Here we find an odd pyramid of plastic bottle caps with a ladybug on the third tier. The day before it was on the first tier. Did it really spend twenty four hours scaling bottle caps? Will it summit??
I feel a bit weird, sharing this here, but if it helps one person, I’m happy to.
The TL;DR - get your colonoscopies.
A few months ago, my insurance company sent me an at home fecal test. I did one a year ago and passed, but this time I got a positive result. I was sure it was a false positive. I didn’t have any symptoms and, to my knowledge, no one in my extended family has ever had cancer of any kind.
It took two months to get a colonoscopy scheduled. The result? Fourteen polyps removed 😳. I just got the lab results and they were ALL precancerous. Thank goodness BCBS sent me that test or I’d still be growing those things.
My takeaway - even if you have no family history or symptoms, get screened. The prep is a pain in the ass, but not horrible and the procedure is nothing. You never know until you know, and then it might be too late. I really feel like I dodged a bullet.
Did you know that a 17th c. Irish woman went to war in disguise?
"Christian Davies" ran a pub until, aged 26, her husband vanished. Upon learning that he was in the British Forces, she cut her hair & joined.
She fought in the Nine Years War, killed a sergeant in a duel, soon fought in the War of Spanish Succession...& found her husband after 13 yrs.
But he had cheated, so she instead stayed a soldier.
It would be 16 yrs until she was discovered.
She was buried with full military honours.
And another unfortunate security thing I learned today is that .svg files can contain JavaScript, and that your browser will happily execute that if someone directly views your image (so not through <img>). This has consequences for anyone hosting user supplied images. Thank you Wander Nauta for pointing this out. The painful story is here: https://github.com/berthubert/trifecta/issues/38

I've been meaning to write up my experience of getting a heat pump all year, and have finally carved out time to do so: https://greenallianceblog.org.uk/2023/12/22/my-heat-pump-a-personal-story-about-a-broken-heating-industry/
It's part personal story, part policy take on what it'd take to make heat pumps the default for all home heating.
The short version is: heat pumps are great! Mine heats my not-very-efficient Victorian house well and is cheaper than gas heating. But I got lucky with an innovative installer - a rarity. The home heating industry needs a big shake up.
Dwie godziny temu napisałem do prezesa firmy będącej naszym operatorem infrastruktury, w związku z poważnymi zaburzeniami pracy naszego wiejskiego internetu: "Większość klientów rozumie, radzę wszystkim by wpłacali na jakiś fundusz obrony Ukrainy. Nieliczni pytaja kto im zrekompensuje brak internetu. Tych odsyłam do Moskwy". Cała historia jest po angielsku – nie miałem siły przetłumaczyć https://qoto.org/@szescstopni/111784146277798699
This is what my street looks like right now, and the #philadelphia streets department just came through and collected my recycling while it’s actively snowing. However much sanitation workers make, it’s not enough.

A stunning photo of several units of heavy equipment — excavators, a bulldozer, etc — building an earthen dam.
the dam goes all the way back into the background, where a sea of red-hot lava is visible. The lava is clearly headed towards the heavy equipment, just a hundred meters or so away.
A solitary worker stands on the dam, looking towards the lava.
