It’s not a #Mosstodon or a #LichenSubscribe, but I think those folks will still enjoy what I think is a slime mold? Part of a colony that only grows in a specific place along our daily walks, under certain cold and very damp conditions, but with good drainage. It looks almost unreal, especially with the dead leaf atop it.

Ok, this is cool: a team of biologists worked out that turtles can talk. The hatchlings even talk to each other in the egg to coordinate their hatching. Turtle talk is at frequencies not very audible for humans and it can take hours for some species to reply to each other.

“Had we had a bit more expansive imaginations, we might have caught this earlier,” said Karen Bakker, a fellow at Harvard’s Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study.

So, why #CAD for #GardenDesign?

We’re in a #Nature & #ClimateEmergency & this world needs more #FoodForest #gardens with #wildlife, #NativePlants & #WildFlowers

🌍🌐
🌱🐛

And we need more wildlife & food forest gardenDesigners!

CAD facilitates this #GardenDesign process. You need to put the time in to learn *but* using #OpenSource software means it doesn’t have to cost the earth.

@MarkBrigham @RollingStone Yet #Tiktok will bury your video in search results if you make any obvious reference to the #Holocaust.

Want to know who Elon Musk really is? Ignore the BS about billionaires and savants. Look at who he listens to, who he banters with all day, and whose concerns he takes seriously. Michael Flynn, restored today, is a straight-up fascist thug and traitor. #Twitter #GOP #USpol

There was no snow left today, but we found some hair ice – an infrequent phenomenon most likely caused by – Exidiopsis effusa. Don't try to pronounce its Polish name: Łojówka różowawa. You might not recognize your tongue afterwards.

"WHO sounds the alarm: New COVID variant is most transmissible yet"
-it's a new SARS-CoV-2 variant
-this will keep happening
-'most transmissible' doesn't also worse in others ways (headlines🙄) , but 3yrs shows it likely means 'at least as bad as'
-get boosted
-wear an N95

I have friends who are very good at math, with job titles like "Professor of Economics" and "Data Scientist," that genuinely believed that poor Black people were shoplifting their way into driving drug stores in San Francisco bankrupt.🤦🏿‍♂️

I had to point out how drug stores actually make money (the pharmacy/prescriptions), and how they really get customers (foot traffic), and how their own quarterly reports even before the pandemic, showed huge over saturation of drug stores in San Francisco.

Hard to believe I once had a phone attached to a wall. When it rang, I’d pick it up not knowing who was calling. Amazing I’m still alive.

I just saw an Instagram reel of a "therapist" dipping her head into icy water to "reset the #vagus nerve".
THIS IS NOT A THING!
The vagus nerve, which is actually the longest #cranial nerve in our body, can be artificially stimulated to help break irregular heart rhythm.

I've been researching how ancient civilizations cleaned their butts after pooping (I'm writing a book!) and y'all, the Ancient Greeks were SUPER punk rock. They used bits of broken ceramic like a scoop (don't worry - the edges were smoothed out) and sometimes THE BITS OF POTTERY WERE INSCRIBED WITH THE NAMES OF THEIR ENEMIES.

They literally wiped their butts with their enemies' names. I am in awe.

Do dead bodies have to wear bras?

#FuneralFactFriday: Bras Aren't Mandatory

Don't want to wear a bra for eternity? No problem! Just let your family know your wishes (and obviously, threaten to haunt them if they don't listen). Embalmers may give suggestions about the most ideal clothing for a family to bring in, but we're more concerned about concealing unpleasant things than about style or impropriety. Most of us will happily dress you in your ensemble of choice. Pajamas, superhero costume, formal business suit with lacey silk undies beneath - it's all good!

Back to the bra situation. We have ways of securing chest parts so they don't end up in your armpits. Duct tape holds everything in place during embalming, then the tissue firms into place and stays put. Weird spots can be filled in with cotton fluff, or my personal favorite: if a woman's clothes include shoulder pads, I remove them (otherwise she'll look like a football player in the casket), then I tuck the shoulder pads into the bra or over the chest area for a smooth curve.

Back in the day, some embalmers used a giant needle and string to suture the chest parts together! Ugh...barbaric. Nowadays, we have more women embalmers and more creative solutions.

Got implants? We leave them alone. There's no need for us to mess with them. If you're cremated, they'll burn up with you. If you're buried, there's no predictable way to know exactly how they'll outlast your embalmed but slowly decomposing body. So, that meme with the implants on top of a skeletal rib cage? If your skin, muscles, and other tissues are gone, then any surviving silicone ball will likely just slide or roll down to the sides of the casket.

Kid just built this in the MoMA sculpture garden and I’ve seen like 10 tourists take photos of it
