Hey geologists and other #geology folks! This stepping stone was a leftover piece from a patio I had put in last year. A friend noticed the pattern on it and asked if these were fossils or just an interesting unique surface. The other side doesn't have the pattern. So what is going on here?

I know a trade name may not mean much, but the mason who installed the patio said this is Pennsylvanian Bluestone, from a quarry in Montana.

Did you know in python you can stick a for loop in the list brackets and just BAM have a list? No “append” check it:

l=[chr(i+65) for i in range(0,26)]
print(l)

> [‘A’, ‘B’, ‘C’, … , ‘Z’]

(it will be the letters A-Z since the unicode for the capital letter starts at 65, chr renders these numbers as letters.)

Is that classy? For some reason this neat little feature isn’t really taught. I guess with a loop and appending you have not flexibility— but still this is cool. #python #coding #tricks

Water pool refugees at lowtide.
I walked on limestone again and saw many of those little water holes with ocean creatures in it, who tried to hide there until the next tide would come in. Look at the sea anemone who is just wrapping herself in. I also wonder if the white underground could be some sort of salt deposit from the salty water. There are moments when I'd really like to be an oceanographer...

Wspomnienie @szescstopni o „islamskich bankach” przypomniało mi jeden uroczy termin z dawnych czasów. Wyderki, l.poj. wyderek.

Wyderki zagnieździły się w prawie i obyczaju dzięki zdecydowanemu potępieniu lichwy przez Kościół. „Lichwy”, czyli każdego pożyczania na procent. Tymczasem — potrzeba czasem przyciskała, potencjalny pożyczkodawca nie rwał się ryzykować pieniędzy bez perspektywy zarobku i trzeba było coś wymyślić.

I tu wchodzą wyderki.

Potrzebna była do tego jakaś nieruchomość. Nasz potrzebujący sprzedawał ją za gotówkę, po czym od razu wynajmował od kupującego, płacąc czynsz na poziomie typowo 7-10% rocznie. Kiedy już uzbierał na spłatę, miał zagwarantowane prawo odkupienia w tej samej cenie, za jaką sprzedał. Widzi papież? Żadnej lichwy! Tylko uczciwy czynsz za wynajem i dwie transakcje kupna-sprzedaży.

No, ale historia kombinacji finansowych tak sobie mnie interesuje, zapamiętałem to tylko ze względu na nazwę. Skąd taka? Pomysł przyszedł do nas z zachodu, oczywiście przez Niemcy. Wyderek zrodził się z wyderkafa, a ten to już zwykły Wiederkauf, czyli „odkup”...

"A school district in Pennsylvania must allow students to convene an After School Satan Club, a federal judge ruled on Monday.

“In a victory for free speech and religious freedom, a federal court has ruled that the Saucon Valley School District must allow the After School Satan Club to meet in district facilities,” the ACLU announced.

In a Monday filing, issued in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania and shared by the ACLU, a judge found that “here, although The Satanic Temple, Inc.’s objectors may challenge the sanctity of this controversially named organization, the sanctity of the First Amendment’s protections must prevail.”

The school district must allow the After School Satan Club, which is sponsored by The Satanic Temple, to meet during the school year on three previously agreed-upon dates, but it won’t have to distribute permission slips for the club for students to take home, according to the filing."
