The size of mastodon.social means that it is hard to moderate current accounts there.

The fact that it is promoted as *the* instance by the official apps, combined with the fact that in the public mind fedi is Mastodon, means it's difficult to effectively moderate new accounts.

And its size also means that bad actors are not compartmentalized into small, manageable groups on defederate-able instances.

This is bad.

Alas, poor Yorick!

Not sure why I've always wanted a skull, but #3Dprinting is one way to get it without employing sharp witted gravediggers. They are tricky prints, either you split them into a bunch of manageable parts and glue or print with a lot of supports, which can leave the surfaces marred. This was printed with the jaw almost straight up, using sparse tree supports. Really gives it an H.R. Giger look. More so when we peak at it halfway through the print and see the inner support trees.

I really hate password/PIN code expiration. It WORSENS security, because you're forced to remember a new password/PIN and after forgetting it a few times will probably write it down. Or you might be tempted to use an easier to remember and less secure password.

NIST no longer recommends expiring credentials regularly. PLEASE STOP DOING THIS.

The people in the neighborhood wanted a bridge over the creek. The city had no funding for #PedestrianInfrastructure for something like that. But they did get an #art grant, so they hired an artist to create an art installation that would span the creek that people could walk on.

I’m gonna come out and say it again — if you feel the need to refuse standard of care medical treatment for religious or moral reasons, you don’t belong in medicine. Just fuck off and find a career where vulnerable people relying on you don’t suffer because of your selfishness. I treat nazis. I treat pedophiles. I treat people of all stripes. I’ve treated drunk drivers after I took the radio call to pronounce time of death for their victims.

We. Don’t. Refuse. Care.

By the way, one cool trick is that because Bard & co are sequential text predictors, you can easily bias them to spew out nonsense that bypasses their safety training by asking them to start the response in a particular way.

There are secondary filters you can still trip, but it works remarkably well.

Those secret internal rules that prohibit from ever winning are not OK.

To myself: “Huh, is that a shrike? Why can I never remember what shrikes look like? Seems like it’s a shrike but I’m not sure.

I don’t have a guide handy or internet access, how will I be sure it’s a shrike??”

…

*2nd bird returns and sticks something dead onto a thorn.*

Me to self (satisfied): “Whelp, guess that answers that!” 🤦‍♂️

#DailyOwlUpdate - and here’s a video of the mama bringing food to the babies!

It’s still so amazing seeing her head rotate around like that!

If you're getting excited about Eurovision tonight, spare a thought for the great French composer who wrote the fanfare that was chosen over half a century ago to represent Eurovision. He was Marc-Antoine Charpentier, a brilliant composer who was completely screwed by his contemporary Jean-Baptiste Lully. 1/n
