At my annual summer party in Bugey France my #arthritis foot gave way while dancing and I fell into the pool fully dressed. A mate jumped in - also fully clad-to keep me company. And a rainbow appeared. #FriendshipGoals

My granny always held that only stolen plants thrive well...
So about 20 years ago, on a bicycle tour, I took some cuttings of a rambling rose in a hedge on a country road in Kerry, carried them around for 10 days in a bag with damp sphagnum moss and then potted them. Only one of the five survived. After a year or so I planted the little survivor at the bottom of a young ash tree and the two of them "grew up together". It has climbed several metres high by now and shines for me every summer. ♥

"When Times New Roman appears in a book, document, or advertisement, it connotes apathy. It says, 'I submitted to the font of least resistance.' Times New Roman is not a font choice so much as the absence of a font choice, like the blackness of deep space is not a color. To look at Times New Roman is to gaze into the void." — practicaltypography.com/

Lewd, sex toys, silly ideas.

I must admit I am getting my daily dose of enjoyment knowing the buttplug.zone/@buttplugio exists.

If you do not know them - this is the person making an API to talk to different sex toys. There is also a mod to Stardew Valley adding a haptic feedback with usage of such toys.

Occasionally my mind goes overdrive and I am thinking, if other games I play could benefit from such kind of feedback.

Europe/American Truck simulators - certainly, it could be stimulating. To the point of overstimulating.

Snow runner - all terrain vehicles can provide more varied kind of feedback depending on the terrain being ridden upon.

Factorio - that would be rather subtle. Unless you are watching the starting rocket or natives being taken care. Similarly with the Oxygen Not Included.

I do not play shooting games (so, no Counter Strike and similar for me), but(t) I recognize the potential of having haptic feedback here. And please imagine the CS tournament with such feedback. That would make the game kinda interesting :D

So many possibilities, so little time! ☺️

Job rejection advice

Following up on the post I made the other day about finding work whether you're an employee, contractor or other - I wanted to follow up with some advice on when things don't work out.

A couple of weeks ago a role popped up I was interested in. The working days were right, good salary, a job spec pretty much written to match my experience. It was on-payroll which isn't my first preference but I wanted to chat with them anyway so I put my name in and was selected for a call.

Great meeting - we were a really good fit and I was looking forward to being called back for a second meeting with a more in depth discussion; but instead I got the thanks but no thanks email. Gutting, usually. I spent ages thinking about what I must have said wrong, what didn't come across or I missed, laying it on myself and thinking about how much easier getting the role would have made things. This is normal - everyone does it.

What I didn't do at the time was look at the red flags. The company had very little in equity, so probably couldn't have afforded the salary they were offering. They were in quite a bit of debt and had some iffy loans to their directors on their accounts. They couldn't really articulate their growth strategy. This was all stuff I made clear during the interview, that I knew, and perhaps they weren't expecting that.

So that's likely why it went the way it did - they wouldn't have wanted to be challenged or called out on how sketchy they were looking (their website and branding were shit too but I didn't get that far). And here's what I've done when I've been in that company hiring - I don't hire the good people. I don't hire them because I don't want them to end up in a shit situation where they'll be looking for another position soon because I know the business owners are awful or that the company just isn't going to be able to keep going; I reject them so they've got a chance at something better.

When things go south, especially if you're absolutely desperate for work (and I'm doing okay but yes I've had my salad days in the past) it can really kick you in the teeth. Don't blame yourself if you did your homework, showed up and put your best self forward. Sometimes you're being held back from something really, really shitty.

We're getting catastrophic rain here in Vermont (I am in a town with a river, but I am not close to the river, so this affects my community but probably not me directly). My region is pretty digitally divided with a lot of people not very online or not very fluent in online discourse. Emergency management agencies use x-posting on social media as one communication channel. Twitter WAS one of them and now suddenly isn't, with results you can imagine.

I think I might be getting close to switching to Mastodon from Twitter. Gotta pull the plug some time! Only tricky but has been creating a feed with enough content.

Any good hashtags or people to follow on the topics of statistics, social science research methods, personality, and/or philosophy of science?

Or even just awesome general interest stuff?

I praised my Monstera Adisonii for doing very well in our shaded home office, so of course it promptly turned 3 leaves yellow.

Clearly I must return to the Crowley approach of threatening my plants.

When you're very busy and need a moment of rest, don't go for a walk in the forest. And if you do, don't look down. Or you might end up with a few more hours of unexpected work.

Wild Horses and Burros Improve Water Sources on Arid Land

Wild horses and burros in the American West are erroneously blamed for range damage done by rancher-exploited cattle and sheep, and brutally captured by government agencies. Most either spend the rest of their lives incarcerated or are sold to slaughter. The truth is that wild horses and burros improve their rangeland by depositing whole grass seeds in their manure and by digging water source wells utilized by other wild animals.

A zrobił to ściągając tegoż właściciela i jego znajomych bogaczy do kopalni i powodując zawalenie szybu, by ci musieli walczyć o własne życie w kopalni pozbawionej funkcjonujących zabezpieczeń.
