Watched Alien Worlds, a four part speculative exobiology series from 2020.

It's clear the CG sequences were expensive so about 80% of the show is people talking about Earth parallels to the alien stuff. I mostly ended up skipping to the CG sequences.

The worst crime: a story about Hadza hunters who live in symbiosis with a bird, the greater honeyguide, that shows them where bee colonies are. Then they switch to the alien planet where a fungus infects these little moth rabbits and changes their behaviour so they get eaten by predators, which then also die. The narrator explains that this is a "deadly symbiosis".

This must be intended to send biologists into a frothing rage. "Deadly symbiosis" is not symbiosis! They even explain it when they talk about the honey hunters: a symbiosis is when both parties benefit! It's just parasitism! Why not use Cordiceps or any other parasitic relationship? A bizarre choice that had me gesticulating at my television.

Co to znaczy?
1) chciałbym, żeby był względnie elegancki, żebym mógł go wykorzystywać zawodowo,
2) powinien być usztywniany,
3) z profilowanymi plecami (czy jak to się tam nazywa),
4 i super, jakby był "powiększany".

Ktoś ma jakieś fajne typy?

In personal news, I dropped the five-year-old off with my parents for three days while I worked from London, and now she has been fishing, ridden a horse and learned to surf in the sea near Hengistbury Head, and I'm not sure I will be able to convince her to come home with me.

Having kids when one's parents are still willing and able to be involved: recommended.

Also, it’s quite snazzy. But the TSA screeners didn’t like it at all.

At once delighted, overwhelmed, and humbled to receive, along with my colleagues Susan Landau and @SteveBellovin , the 2023 Usenix Association Lifetime Achievement Award, citing work bridging technology and public policy. Thank you!

Anyone here have experience creating ISO images from DVDs using those thin USB drives?

I'm having a lot of trouble reading certain discs. I have a stack of 6 discs where I'm consistently only getting about 85% of the data.

I'm wondering if these compact drives have more issues with such discs than the older, bulkier kinds.

Ich verwandel mich immer mehr in meine eigenen (Ur-)Großeltern: Die Kartoffeln werden frisch aus dem Garten geerntet, die Wäsche auf dem Dachboden aufgehängt und das Gras mit der Sense gemäht. Back to the roots.

The old, sturdy power pole, bravely providing electricity to our home despite the storms. Living at the end of the line means we're the last to get fixed when strong winds damage transmission lines. It's living on the edge, until we can afford a photovoltaic installation.

Outdoor spaces without any insects (especially ants) in warm weather are creepy. I legit get an uncanny feeling wondering What Was Done to make this little park, yard, or garden so barren.

Do not ask "how do I get rid of bugs?" instead consider "which bugs would I prefer?"

Inseln brennen, Atolle versinken im Ozean, Berge rutschen ab und Gletscher schmelzen weg, oder wie Stumpfkartoffeln es nennen: man weiß bald nicht mehr, wohin man noch in Urlaub fliegen soll

Before I was born, my family moved “back to the woods” in 1971. We were part of a commune/cult in rural Tennessee.

We were worse at *literally* everything: building houses, heating them, running water, heating it, growing food, cooking it, transportation, fixing things, making things.

Everything.

The cult fell apart because its inefficiency was unsustainable.

Ask me how much patience I have for people who say they want to go “off the grid” in the country.

I continue to find it interesting that in the context of climate change you get called a “doomer” if someone thinks you’re giving up the fight, but in the context of COVID you get called a “doomer” for being one of the few people who hasn’t given up the fight.

Our neighbour's old window was damaged recently by strong winds. I'm now trying to convince her to switch to something more stable. Like Ubuntu.
