Time to update my satellite pollution talk for this weekend.
There are 500 more Starlink satellites today than when I gave this talk in July.
4,924 Starlinks in orbit now (56% of the total 8,728 active satellites in orbit).
Just your periodic reminder that one company owned by one pretty awful dude effectively controls outer space now.
Last year we released a statement in which we said we will continue “to monitor changes at Twitter in conjunction with internal discussions about whether our presence on the platform will continue.”
We now announce that as of today, 20 October 2023, all our #socialmedia engagements will be from this Mastodon account, as well as LinkedIn and YouTube, and none from our 5 #Twitter / X accounts.
Find out about these changes and more here: https://carpentries.org/blog/2023/10/announcing-the-carpentries-departure-from-x-and-facebook/
Today The Carpentries is launching a new program of Collaborative Lesson Development Training!
We've opened up the program for registration from groups of collaborators who have an idea for a lesson that they want to begin developing together. The the curriculum for the program was planned, developed and piloted since July 2021, and the first training event is planned for November 2023.

legal transition
I should try to figure out how expensive lawyers that know how to handle this are.
If I can afford it I want to just get a lawyer to represent me in court if there's a trial, I just can't deal with this bullshit myself.
It's not like this is a difficult case, I have supportive parents and all the medical documentation necessary.
But I just can't fucking handle the idea of having to prove again that I'm trans enough to be considered valid by the system. I just fucking can't.
For those of us receiving email in multiple languages, it would be awesome to have #Firefox Translate built in to Thunderbird. No sending your sensitive conversations to a corporate cloud, just a lean translation service running locally.
We've decided to make it a development priority for Q1 2024!
You'll be able to track the progress via this bug: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1823007
But as always, we'll also keep you posted right here.
Samotny bocian w Brusie
#bocian #natura #ptaki #przyroda https://polesie.pol.social/m/przyroda/t/12
From my adventures in #OpenScience and #OpenPedagogy: I always thought the importance of #OpenAccess was that people can read the paper and access the data, so sharing a version of record or a postprint of a paywalled paper would do the job. Only when I started preparing #OERs I realized the importance of licensing: being able to re-use figures, datasets, code from publications. In #sedmentology ans #geoscience #OpenAccess is a sore minority. I can access the most important papers from my field, but I cannot share my teaching based on them.
Fortunately my former supervisor agreed to license his thin section collection with a #CreativeCommons license, so I am gradually adding them here https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Geozentrum_Nordbayern (more to come).
FWIW I've also learned that @GIMP is great for editing #metadata but Mastodon web interface does not read it from the image.
First snow!
+2°C and I fired up the wood boiler in the basement. Cleaned the soot out yesterday so it burns well.
Today I filed a formal complaint against #YouTube with the Irish Data Protection Commissioner for their illegal deployment of #adblock detection technologies.
Under Article 5(3) of 2002/58/EC YouTube are legally obligated to obtain consent before storing or accessing information already stored on an end user's terminal equipment unless it is strictly necessary for the provisions of the requested service.
In 2016 the EU Commission confirmed in writing that adblock detection requires consent.
@cstross oh I know, the conclusion section is also very funny. I just like the oit of context title.
