There is this misconception that people in the Middle Ages only lived to their thirties.

This is of course misleading, since this is the mean age at death.

About half died as infants.

Using the median instead gives a clearer picture of #medieval lifespan.

Median age at death was 1.

A fair and important point. The drafters of Section 3 of the 14th Amendment understood why you needed to keep dangerous insurrectionists off the ballot in the first place.

If your platform bans consenting adults posting pictures of their own bodies and their interactions with other consenting adults bodies but does not ban Nazis, you can't tell me that you don't censor content. You do censor content, you're just okay with Nazis.

🆕 blog! “Book Review: The Modern Bestiary - A Curated Collection of Wondrous Creatures by Joanna Bagniewska”
★★★★★

My friend Dr Joanna has written a marvellous book! Full of bone-eating snot flowers, stuffed with silly footnotes about antlions, and gorgeously illustrated. This is a quick rattle through over a hundred weird - and…

Lunchtime train of thought...

- Hey, that moss looks like a figure, reaching out

- I should add a Santa hat

- Hang on, it's the winter solstice isn't it? I should add antlers.

- Hmm. That doesn't work with the Santa hat. Wonder if it would work in green.

- Hmmm.

*Goes down a bit of a solstice rabbit hole*

- Oh. I'm a day early for solstice.

- Bah.

*posts anyway*

Happy Train's Secondary Compressor Stops Working Day to all who celebrate it! 🤗

This is what I mean when I say “nature isn’t something you ‘go to.’” This fern has been living under my car for a long time. #Ferns, y’all. Not sure if I should encourage it somehow, if I even could, or transplant it somehow. I’m worried I’ll damage it if I try, so it’ll probably just live there until it can’t. It’s kind of amazing though, isn’t it? #plants #botany

Fedigov to pomysł Free Software Foundation Europe @fsfe żeby zainteresować instytucje publiczne korzystaniem z wolnych, federacyjnych platform komunikacji.

We tried to simulate 1000 viewers on a #PeerTube video, and then on a livestream. (Note that 99% of twitch livestreams are under 1000 simultaneous views.)

We optimized accordingly... And here are the results: it works!

With a ~20$ server, PeerTube can now support such usecases.

Hey cool, apparently when you write something for Nature they send you a free paper copy! Kinda neat to see my name in there.

I sincerely hope my article makes someone in power think a little harder about the lack of regulations in orbit (but I'm not holding my breath...I'll keep fighting)

The free link to read the article is a couple posts up-thread, if you are interested and haven't already read it.

Today was the first day I ran this script and didn't hit some little bug or wrinkle that required me immediately debugging my code. When I'm a bit more confident in it I'll run it w/ an auto-scheduler.

Someone please clap lol. This is lonely work.

“#Tesla blamed drivers for failures of parts it long knew were defective

Wheels falling off cars at speed. Suspensions collapsing on brand-new vehicles. Axles breaking under acceleration. Tens of thousands of customers told Tesla about a host of part failures on low-mileage cars. The automaker sought to blame drivers for vehicle ‘abuse,’ but Tesla documents show it had tracked the chronic ‘flaws’ and ‘failures’ for years.”
