You may have seen the viral video of the Israeli soldier bragging openly about killing Palestinian children and babies in #Gaza, to the merry amusement of the people he was speaking to.
Neither the attitude nor the action is new or rare and it's certainly not a post-traumatic response to Oct 7.
More than twenty years ago, I spent some time on a teaching English certification course together with an American evangelical couple. I was probably the only Palestinian they'd ever met. After a couple of weeks they worked up the courage to ask me about something that had been bothering them. They told me how an American-Israeli acquaintance of theirs back home had told them casually about having killed a young child when he was in the IDF “but so what, he was only an Arab".
This couple were decent people who clearly suffered from the cognitive dissonance that encounter had triggered. I guess they were hoping to hear something from me that would help them make sense of it. But I'm not sure it helped when they saw that I was not even the slightest bit shocked or surprised to hear about their friend’s admission, because of course he did.
"Yeah #Threads is full of Nazis but what are you going to do, go back to Mastodon? They get mad at you for not using alt text in your pictures. That's like way worse."

With so much bad news in the media, it’s important to remember that amazing advances continue to be made in #science and #medicine.

@pluralistic no talking in the mall
in my blog posts I often say that I don't know things. I have a few goals with this:
1. show that a lot of things that feel like they "should" be obvious actually are not obvious (very often I'll say "I don't know X" and nobody in the replies/comments will have the answer either!)
2. make writing faster (just saying "I don't know" is much faster than doing 3 hours of research to try to figure out the answer)
3. show that it's ok to not know things
Lynn Conway, electricial engineer and computer scientist, co-architect of the VLSI design revolution, and transgender activist, was born #OTD in 1938.
She invented Dynamic Instruction Scheduling at IBM, but IBM fired her when they learned she was transitioning.

I just heard that an amazing small organisation, a plumbing firm that helps people in need in the north of England, has been literally hounded off the birdsite by Tory trolls who think _helping people_ is "socialism". We can't go helping people for free, now can we? 🙄
But Twitter's loss is our gain, as Depher is now among us at @Depher - please give them a follow and your support.
What really makes me angry and desperate in this time of multiple crises is the fact that even the "moderate" parties here in #Germany prefer to badmouth each other or blow up niche issues to the maximum instead of working *together* on solutions to the real problems.

I thought I was experiencing #ClimateGrief, but maybe it's more like #PoliticsGrief or #LobbyistAnger ? 🤔

@robertatcara As someone who personally discovered and fixed bugs that would have had significant real world impact, it is disturbing to hear someone propagate this myth. And it is a myth.
https://time.com/5752129/y2k-bug-history/
The testing methodology insured that these impacts were not hypothetical. At my company, the testing was performed by "actually rolling the clock forward* on test. systems to see what would happen. For example, I discovered that every ATM in the state of Alaska operated by my company would have locked up until a chip was swapped. Someone had to fly all over the state to proactively swap the chip beforehand, to avoid significant customer impact.
And that was just one story. I personally oversaw investigation and fixes for other hardware and software at that company that would have failed.
And that was just my company. I spoke with others in IT at that time with similar stories. And that was just the people I knew.
So no, it wasn't "a big fuss about nothing" - and saying so is both dangerously revisionist, and disrespectful of the work it took to prevent real impacts.
I just found out that the guy who makes "Crime Pays but Botany Doesn't" is also and ex NYC bike messenger (like me) and somehow this just ... it explains so much.
Being a messenger causes you to see the city from a rare vantage point. You feel like a blood cell in a vast gothic organism. But it also engenders a kind of fundamental cantankerousness that makes for the strangest kind of naturalist perspective.
I should write more about that some time...
