Members of Twitter’s Trust&Safety Council Resign
in Protest Against Elon Musk's 'Safety' Messages to Date
We are announcing our resignation from Twitter's Trust and Safety Council because it is clear from research evidence that, contrary to claims by Elon Musk, the safety and wellbeing of Twitter's
users are on the decline. The question has been on our minds:Should Musk be allowed to define digital safety as he has freedom of expression? Our answer is a categorical “no.”
My wife (@skaeth here on Mastodon) has been #writing #fantasy books for several years and has three self-published novels out now. They get good reviews, but despite that she hardly ever manages to sell any (we're talking like 2 or 3 copies a month)! So if you're in the market for an indie fantasy book or two (or three), I'd appreciate it if you considered her stuff: https://www.skaeth.com.

I think it's a power thing. Funding decisions are centralized into a few people. They can either centralize the funding for its own projects or target it towards projects they like. And something similar can happen in peer review. If a prominent researcher says that the paper is bad it might not be due it's content but it might be contrary to its own work. Then when a prominent researcher dies it creates a power vacuum and everyone rush to take it's place.
Does science advance one funeral at a time?
One paper morbidly suggests so: "after the death of a star scientist, the flow of articles by non-collaborators [of the deceased] increases markedly [...] and is disproportionately likely to be highly cited."
The top 1% most-cited scientists account for 21% of citations. So a star's death leads to a citation vacuum, allowing lesser known researchers the chance to advance and reform the field.

5) Back to COVID: Although the total number of active outbreaks climbed to 406, the most severe ones in long-term care declined by two to 22 in a week. This suggests outbreaks may be erupting in hospitals, but if that's the case, authorities aren't making public that information.
