Why is scientific fraud not taken seriously?

"Institutions may be reluctant to accept that someone is fraudulent if that person occupies a high-ranking role [...] Publishers may be reluctant to retract papers unless there is an institutional finding of misconduct, even if there is clear evidence"

@ElisabethBik "noted that 60-70% of the 800 papers she had reported to journals had not been dealt with within 5 years."

New ideas pass through three periods:
1) It can't be done.
2) It probably can be done, but it's not worth doing.
3) I knew it was a good idea all along!

How much centralization is too much?

Well, if your city falls off the internet, are emergency services able to talk to each other and contact citizens?

If your neighborhood has the power cut, can you still use your part of the internet if you have solar power?

What is the smallest chunk of the network that can still do what it was funded to do?

If that chunk is the entire network, that is too much centralization.

I think the most unbelievable idea in conspiracy theories is the "secret council". For some reason a group of power thirsty individuals leave their differences and desires behind to secretly rule the world. Lizard people secretly rule the world, well maybe. Lizard people secretly ruling the world under a democratic utopia and long term planing, nop I don't see that happening.

What a profoundly ridiculous take. We have no “ecological relationship” worth preserving with pathogenic respiratory viruses. They are parasites, not symbionts. This deadly theater of the absurd requires ever-increasing levels of suspension of disbelief. telegraph.co.uk/news/2022/12/0

Peer review, a huge waste of time, and therefore money ?

Figure 👇🏼 and excerpts taken from Aczel et al. 2021 doi.org/10.1186/s41073-021-001

“…the total time reviewers globally worked on peer reviews was over 100 million hours in 2020, equivalent to over 15 thousand years. The estimated monetary value of the time US-based reviewers spent on reviews was over 1.5 billion USD in 2020 […] The numbers highlight the enormous amount of work and time that researchers provide to the publication system.”

(authors add: By design, our results are very likely to be under-estimates as they reflect only a portion of the total number of journals worldwide.)

9 Dec '21: @fitterhappierAJ anticipated that Covid would become increasingly harmful, like in the RMA15 experiment, where the virus became more lethal as it mutated in mice.

Children will be the early indicator because they produce fewer antibodies.

In older people, loss of regulatory T cells results in severe disease/death.

🔘 depletes a subset of naive cells, suggesting chronic inflammation
🔘 reduces your cells' ability to alert your immune system to virally infected cells and specific antigens 🤖 #LeonardiEffect #CovidIsNotMild

👋 Hi everyone, time for an #introduction as I have recently moved Mastodon instances (and finally feel at home on here).

My name is Tim, I am a Professor at the Institute of Cognitive Science (University of Osnabrück, Germany), where I run an interdisciplinary ML/cognitive computational neuroscience lab.

My team and I focus on understanding visual processing, and information processing more generally, in both brains and machines.

We love to tinker with deep (recurrent) neural networks, and analyse neuroimaging data (mainly M/EEG, and fMRI). I firmly believe that the interdisciplinary space between ML and Neuroscience can teach us lots about how brains operate.

If you are curious about the work we do, this could be a good starting point: arxiv.org/abs/2209.03718

Looking forward to exchanging ideas with you all.
