First post on mastodon! I'm thrilled to share our new manuscript on the metagenomic discovery, biochemistry, & structural insights of novel phage-derived CRISPR-Cas systems and their development into gene-editing tools! Now published @cellcellpress https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0092867422013666
I was just on another social media platform and a friend said they had #Covid... For the FIFTH TIME... 5..
All the comments were oh no, that must be a record, hope the symptoms are mild, etc etc etfuckingcetera

Luckily the feed refreshed before I could comment.
Job alert: #Postdoc on the repeatability of evolution and historical contingencies in thermal adaptation of an insect pest species. Job is based at Uppsala University (Sweden), supervised by David Berger and me. Ad is here: https://evol.mcmaster.ca/~brian/evoldir/PostDocs/UUppsala.GenomicsThermalAdaptation
@anildash In my mental model OpenAI is more a continuation of general search plus neural networks. And I love my Wikidata (LOVE) and my ActivityPub and the librarians have made pretty good use of linked data. What does keep me up at night is that the Semantic Web ideas are used to create huge knowledge graphs and then those are rarely shared back to the open web except as SERPs. It's just silos like always.
Thrilled to share our latest podcast episode featuring Dr. Michele Battle! She discusses her research on gut development and gastrointestinal diseases, the western blot that may have saved her scientific career, some of her favorite scientific travel experiences, and more!

Watched the Animatrix again a few days ago. Going dark will 100% kill us faster than the robot apocalypse. If there's an AI apocalypse it will be silent full of gaslight, information control and only small violent acts. Well that's my guess right now. Perhaps the prosperity and liberty showed in the robot society it's only a silent desire for a better society.

"The amyloid cascade hypothesis was simple and “seductively compelling,” said Scott Small, the director of the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center at Columbia University. And the idea of aiming drugs at the amyloid plaques to stop or prevent the progression of the disease took the field by storm.
Decades of work and billions of dollars went into funding clinical trials of dozens of drug compounds that targeted amyloid plaques. Yet almost none of the trials showed meaningful benefits to patients with the disease."

Allow me to introduce myself. My name is John Adair. I’m a student of the School of Journalism and Communication at the University of Oregon. I’m also a photographer, videography, artist, entrepreneur, and father of triplets. I’m here because I never favored Twitter and I’m over Instagram. Hoping to make my new social media home here. You can expect visual storytelling from me on this platform.
Mastodon please help me with something. I'm a #trans guy with practically no trans guy friends. I know nothing about trans guys. I only know about James.
I could really do with some transmasc and trans men friends so.... hi?

Not trying to appeal to the vehement anti-maskers, but I implore my friends on here:

Twitter is now blocking links to pixelfed!

JFC 😳. The variant is BF. 7. "To put this into context, BF.7 is believed to have an R0, or basic reproduction number, of 10 to 18.6. This means an infected person will transmit the virus to an average of 10 to 18.6 other people. Research has shown omicron has an average R0 of 5.08"
