An astounding image of our moment at the precipice:
Climate activists standing against the inhuman-scale machinery of the open-pit Lützerath brown coal mine, with a wind farm visible in the distance.

This is as clear a reminder as any that--as Timnit Gebru and others have been at pains to stress--what we think of as "AI" is frequently guided by humans in explicit ways, and that this invisible human labour is disproportionately done in the Global South and/or by underpaid and undervalued workers. *They* are the ghosts in the machine.
It's notable that Sama's slogan is "The Soul of AI."

Shameless Self-Promotion (which, to be fair, is very much in vogue at the moment)
Since we're currently in a backlash of "HEY YOU SMALL CREATORS, YOU JUST PUSH YOUR GOODIES ALL YOU LIKE BECAUSE WE'RE ALL FRIENDS HERE"...
Buy my books. Er, please. They're REALLY good.
Well, three of them are. One is more a labor of love which could probably stand some revision. But the rest - WHOOO DOGGIES, that's some good learnin'! And readin'! Maybe even a touch of inspiration here and there.

Today’s piece about Elon Musk’s Twitter by @caseynewton @zoeschiffer @alexeheath is incredible.
The level of dysfunction inside that company is much worse than what I could have imagined… https://www.theverge.com/23551060/elon-musk-twitter-takeover-layoffs-workplace-salute-emoji
