Hi I’m Rakia (pronounced rock-yah) and I’m a fourth-year #chemistry PhD candidate in the Patterson Lab at UC Irvine.

I work on understanding how proteins influence the #crystallization pathways of #Metal-OrganicFrameworks using transmission electron microscopy #TEM and in-situ spectroscopy techniques.

I’m a #WorkingMom and passionate about #DEIB, #mentorship, and #outreach.

Are there any studies about the statistics of cross validation search based hyperparameter tuning in #MachineLearning? ML folks seem very comfortable trying many different models on the same dataset and picking the one with the best metrics, but statisticians avoid this because it yields overfit models and biased estimates. So, I'm wondering if this is really a good practice in ML or if it systematically yields models that underperform on new data.

"We don't sell your #data " Of course big tech companies don't sell your data. That's like selling raw iron. It's not much use to many people. What they do sell are inferences from your data. Such as your age, gender, geographical location, interests etc.

Thanks to the Smurf-based two-phase ageing model, we show - in D. melanogaster - that the so-called transcriptional signature of ageing is mostly carried by the Smurf phase, the last phase of life, while the non-Smurf phase is associated with an increasing transcriptional noise.
We demonstrate here the importance of including the two-phase model in ageing studies.
