@jacobsimmering "In fact, a well-supported theory holds that publicly traded transportation businesses are especially welcoming of safety regulation because it shifts responsibility for accidents—and the storms that follow—to government." https://www.wsj.com/articles/why-rail-is-stuck-in-the-aol-era-ohio-train-derailment-amtrak-boeing-technology-brakes-norfolk-southern-5a63f15a?st=censr04tb6gv9n4&reflink=desktopwebshare_permalink
@jacobsimmering Poor Nate Silver. Look at the reactions. https://twitter.com/NateSilver538/status/1629876115480141824
@paul Radio 4's Start the Week this time with Martin Wolf & Bernie Sanders.
@mimsical What I don't get is why prompt engineering can't be automated or at least made easy. "PromptBase is a marketplace to buy and sell prompts." And what kind of training is needed to become a prompt engineer?
@danluu Though not spam, I get a steady stream of gmails with slightly different address spellings. I chalk it up to Postel's Law.
@paul The most interesting forecasts on rates, inflation, and employment are the bets that go out more than five years.
@danluu I'm interested in the process you used to come to this conclusion (about Napoleon). Is it from reading just journal articles on military history? E.g. did you also look at economic and finance accounts during the period?
The announcement of LaMDA & Bard is not surprising; there are claims outside Google that ChatGPT tech is a threat to search, hence this reaction. My perception is that this is a trend comparable to the gradual demise of tech support we saw at the end of the last century. It used to be that one could reach highly knowledgeable developers to assist in problem solving. That turned out to be too expensive, so companies added layers of intermediaries that would discuss and triage, thus filtering calls to protect developers. For some problems, the added layers degraded tech support. So now, with LLM search, the agent will talk endlessly about your query, shielding traditional keyword/specialist search engines. For some customers, this will actually improve matters because their searches can be answered with a few superficial facts. For more technical queries and expert users, this approach will be wasteful.
@muratdemirbas Productivity hack that Cal did not try (I think). https://simonberens.me/blog/i-hired-5-people
@guan Have you ever been employed on a farm?
@mimsical 99% of them unedited. There is a calamitous shortage of editors.
@muratdemirbas This almost makes vi usable. https://github.com/Exafunction/codeium.vim
