I wish the fediverse had a universally recognized way to convey "I'm dropping the original poster from my reply to this boosted toot because I don't know them and am not sure if they'd want to be @-ed by a stranger – but I'd welcome them in this conversation if they'd like to participate."

Someone outta make an emoji.

I find the concept of not being notified about a reply kinda odd in the first place, but it makes more sense as threads get bigger and branch out.

Yeah, I'm thinking of bigger threads. I'm thinking in particular of toots where the following hold: ①I don't follow the OP, ②the OP doesn't follow me/isn't on my instance, ③The toot has already gotten a lot of replies & boosts, ④I (partly) disagree.

When those 4 are true, I worry that a reply might be unwelcome and often err on silence

@codesections won't later replies in a long thread just go unnoticed? no worries then! I always look to and I believe threads can be subscribed/unsubscribed to there . Tempted to loop in Hubzilla/Zap/Streams' @ mike@unfediverse.com here.

I just use the convention of menting people in the thread I am not replying to, at the end.
