I really am having a tough time choosing between #Calckey and #Akkoma as my main #SelfHosted #SingleUser home in the #Fediverse. I think Calckey would be a no-brainer for an instance with a dozen to a hundred people on it who wanted to be an actual community within the Fediverse, but maybe Akkoma is better for a single-user instance because of how few resources it demands.

@skroobler

How much less resources does #Akkoma uses compared to #Calckey? If it's not substantial, just keep #Calckey as it sounds like you really like Calckey but only thinking about Akkoma for due to it being lighterweight but if it's not substantially lighter weight, just go for the system you want to interact with day to day.

Also, ask yourself if you like the Akkoma features, can you live without them if you go Calckey and vice versa.

Though if resource usage is a key concern, consider checking out #Takahe, it's a lot more lightweight than both Akkoma & Calckey... It isn't feature complete, but it looks like it has most of the features people would want in a single-user instance: https://docs.jointakahe.org/en/latest/features/

That being said, choose the system that you want to interact with daily, if you're just picking based on how much resource it uses, and don't like the features or UX, you're gonna end up hating it in the long run. Just keep in mind that it's not easy to migrate between these servers as they're so different, there's no conversion scripts available atm.

@deltatux@tuxz.one Sure, that's the gist of what I'm doing and why I spun up both. (and others, which I've already eliminated from contention)

@skroobler I guess this has to be a hard-nosed decision. Does Akkoma run lighter than Epicyon, which uses files for storage? I would go for an Erlang stack over a Python one, but Epicyon is ... interesting.
@deltatux

@tetrislife@qoto.org @deltatux@tuxz.one And the decision isn't 100% about any one factor, resource usage (and subsequent cost) is just one, though I'm on a fixed income so I can't just lay out for a bare metal server with 16 cores and 128GB of RAM or something.

@skroobler @tetrislife

I know you spoke about the use of snapshots for backups/restore. If you don't mind using a bargain bin host that doesn't have snapshot support, I think you can still get a Calckey instance running on a $25/year VPS without much issues. I don't think it requires more than 2 vCPUs & 4GB of RAM does it?

@deltatux@tuxz.one @tetrislife@qoto.org No, that would work fine. I'm okay at my current price point, and I like my provider.

@tetrislife@qoto.org @deltatux@tuxz.one Spun up an #Epicyon server, and I like it! I don't see it being my main fediverse presence, but having a fedi server you could damn near host from dialup (okay, maybe at least a slow DSL) and access from any browser from #Lynx on up seems like a good thing to have sitting there in case of who knows what.

@tetrislife @skroobler

My concern over a flat file platform is that as you amass statuses over time, especially if you like to post & boost a lot, performance with flat files may be problematic when it comes to searches and what not, basically scalability may be an issue.

Even ActivityPub microblogging systems designed with single user instances in mind like GoToSocial & Takahe all use databases. Yes, you're adding complexity but often you get better performance so I'm not so sure...
