NZ politics
@dn @strypey interesting. So it wasn't always like this?
In my corner of the world, the focus of modern political discourse has remained on emotive issues and personalities. I think the modern concept of a federal government results in an intangibles-only view for the populace, which is great for misdirection. That is much harder to do at the provincial level or lower, but that is only useful if the federal government doesn't dominate the domain.

Not in NZ. I've been following politics here since the early 1980s. There have always been larger-than-life politicians whom people loved or loathed (Muldoon, Lange, Douglas, Bolger, Peters, Anderton etc), but there was also much more discussion of policy detail, both in the news media, and in the living rooms and barbeque areas of ordinary kiwis.
