Thinking about deploying services on a VPS. It's incredibly manual: set up a distro → install stuff on it via SSH.

Considering creating a tool that helps you provision on a VPS similarly to how you would on a cloud by easing usability - with GUI with status & controls for your apps via localhost or other remote servers.

Is that something anyone would be interested in? Know anything similar? What are your thoughts?

#webdev #vps #hosting #selfhosted #deployment #provision

@casraf I guess that's what e.g. Nomad does. There are some more similar systems as well. Digital Ocean offers this as (quite expensive) service.

@demiurg Nomad seems pretty much what I mean. DO and Linode have these things, yes, but there are 2 limitations I want to avoid:

1. The install usually is only good for the first app, then if you want more on the same VPS it's not trivial - the 1-click installers generate new nodes/VPSs for you
2. These are 3rd party managed and I want something you can use to set up your own #selfhosted stuff with a similar approach to cloud services

@casraf I stumbled over this project here on Masto:
coolify.io/

I for myself would be happy about something like this. It is always either setup your own stuff and use docker compose or swarm or go full scale global K8s madness :D I was happy with Swarmpit but it seems no longer maintained...

@demiurg
Damn, that looks incredible. Wondering if there's even a point for mine 😂😅

@casraf Looks like a one man show - probably you can team up ^^

@demiurg @casraf I am ignorant about the gnatliness of instances in the cloud, but has had - fully automated install - forever from what I recall. Nowadays there are reproducible builds and distributions like . I must be missing why has won over the cloud crowd (and why seems to be winning over the desktop crowd).
