It would be handy if there was a @matrix homeserver package that could handle multiple domains, like @takahe does for ActivityPub. That way many small groups could give their members matrix accounts using their own domain names, while sharing the work and expenses of running a single homeserver.

@strypey is this in order to serve multiple domains from one instance of an AP server? Is that just for amortizing resource usage? Is it required if lightweight AP servers can be run per sub-domain? There is no lightweight Matrix server, I guess.

Yes. Yes. Maybe not? Not as far as I know.

Are there any lightweight AP servers that are actively developed, with all the features someone migrating from Mastodon would expect?

@matrix @takahe

@strypey Mastodon-compatible? No alternative is, I guess, based on all that I keep reading about the looseness of the AP spec and all the trouble reported in Hubzilla/Streams forums regarding connections with AP accounts. Mike Macgirvin elaborates there on each issue, and makes sufficient interoperability with Mastodon sound impossible for an AP system with groups (e.g. Streams).

Dozens of other apos have managed the basics just fine. I'm just not sure if any of them are lightweight enough that hosting multiple domains on Takahē wouldn't be more efficient.

Lemmy seems to have managed it, and it's entirely group-based.

Basic compatibility? Hubzilla/Streams do that, I think. Epicyon too, likely. Both can be run on RPi-class hardware or shared VPS, I believe, Epicyon without even a database.

hmmm, Streams had some complaints.

I haven't tested Streams or Epicyon yet, but unless the UX has improved considerably, I wouldn't ask a customer to use Hubzilla. I found it incredibly confusing the few times I tried to use it.

@strypey Hubzilla is confusing, true. I haven't used Epicyon.
