Probably for a larger organization the first step is to have individual journalists join sites that reasonably reflect their beat and are compatible with your organizations values and then you can extended your current sites to provide domain validation links to indicate their official status.
As an example, the Washington Post did that and wrote up some information about how and issues they faced.

It looks like NPR has working RSS/ATOM feed and enterprising individuals can setup their own gateways.

Hopefully you don't mind unofficial mirrors?
Also maybe instead of just setting up your own mastodon server, maybe for a news agency, something more similar to the wordpress activity pub plugin might make more sense?

(there might be performance issues with the plugin, but that was also before Automatic got directly involved)
In many ways Mastodon is designed to encourage conversations, is that an appropriate way to interact with published news stories?
It does seem like readers do love adding comments, but some people can get really obnoxious, which can make comments a challenge to deal with.
There's also some issues for journalism where there's a lot of freelancers who don't necessarily trust their employers, and may not want to required to be on their occasional employers sites?
