Using your real identity online stopped restraining people from saying and doing awful things around the same time the awful people realized there weren't actually any real life consequences most of the time.

Consequences fall almost entirely on the poor and marginalized.

This is one of the reasons we've seen social media spaces taken over and weaponized against marginalized groups.

"Cancel culture" and online criticism was one of only consequences powerful and privileged people ever had to worry about so they've taken steps to negate that.

The rest of us either have to live with spaces that tolerate and promote abuse against us or find / make spaces of our own.

But the latter will be systematically marginalized every chance they get.

This is why I want platforms like Mastodon to be successful -- so they will be relevant and not merely an easily ignored niche.

The people who are happy with Mastodon and the Fediverse being niche don't seem to care what happens to the larger political and social media landscape as long as it doesn't intrude upon them personally.

Which is kind of a shitty attitude, if you ask me.

If it didn't intrude on you personally, wouldn't you be just like "the people"?

What does a non-Mastodon Fediverse instance with a reasonable admin lack?
