From the pages of Deccan Herald this morning.

I sincerely hope that they don’t end up writing a new MTA just for made-in-india bragging rights to power ‘imail’.

In fact, the default method of hosting email was indeed to self-host it using libre software. Libre Software is as indigenous as it gets.

IIMA and IISc used to host their email themselves (ie. ‘imail’ by default) but use Google and Microsoft respectively today. This is a significant regression.

It not only eliminates the skills needed to build, maintain and sustain such infrastructure but also limits innovation (because people are no longer ‘scratching their own itch’) and discourages research in such domains because they are now designated “somebody else’s problem”.

How are the same people now going to build ‘imail’?

@abhas ow! How will they indigenize an existing standard! Where will they host it? I think NIC has a cloud but, capacity?

The most generally-useful thing any of them can do is bring as default, in SMS for a start, and some real "scientific" work in making it usable to type in Indic languages. They can't secure SMS, but they can use smartphone penetration to supplant e-mail in other ways. They probably won't.
