"The functioning ecosystem of the small musicians was being plundered by the big players, burning people out, breaking trust, incentivising and capitalising until the system was broken. This used to be called “selling out” and was regarded as problematic. These days it has been retitled as having an “exit strategy” and is expected of all startups."

@cwebber In actuality, I really wonder what's next for the Fediverse.

We need a more robust security model. Circles/Aspects, permissions, reputation and moderation stuff.

We need creature comforts like painless migration, nomadic identity, content discovery, etc.

And all that might mean inventing a more advanced protocol than what ActivityPub provides right now.

And maybe do it in a more focused and purpose-driven way than how AP was born.

And also possibly provide the libraries right from the get-go, not wait for another Mastodon to show up and implement it.

Have you seen @sean's writeup?

I think it's worth a look.

@rhiaro

It's Proof Of Waste, not Proof Of Work. Using the marks' language legitimizes their delusion and devalues actual work; if energy is expended towards nothing, then it's not work, it's waste.

Proof Of Waste.

@pluralistic isn't laundering of blood money and by "third-world" strongmen a secondary problem, if at all? plenty of western companies and "first-world" strongmen make their respective billions of blood money legally in military contracts and "industrialization" and "reconstruction" (a.k.a nature's disfiguration) in conflict zones the world over.

"banking secrecy" is just one of the methods of the exploiters' madness.

As Jeffrey Neiman - lawyer for the Credit Suisse whistleblowers - told the *Guardian*, "How many rogue bankers do you need to have before you start having a rogue bank?" I'd add, given that this rot extends beyond Credit Suisse to UBS and undoubtably further, "How many rogue bankes do you need to have before you start having a rogue banking system?"

The friend who emailed me about this wrote, "After so many of these, I am accepting that these leaks don't matter, and that those in power don't actually want to fix the system. Sunlight isn't doing any disinfecting at all."

He's not wrong, but that's not the whole story.

The problem isn't the *transparency*, it's the *inaction*.

@dentangle the problem is that even tho 1 Billion is a mind boggling amount of money, 1 Billion is not enough.

Nothing short of everything is enough.

Mozilla are going out of their way to help surveillance advertisers. Why? Because "ads fund the web". Mozilla says they want "privacy preserving ads".

This is horseshit.

Privacy preserving ads exist and always have. Just don't track us. Don't personalise ads.

I didn't mind the original Google ads.Show me an ad for a keyword I'm actively searching for, by all means. Isn't creepy, doesn't harm privacy, and is sometimes useful.

That was what made Google its first billion. So what's the problem?

@0 true. There is also the parallel processing of the pipeline on SMP kernels, which sometimes can be just enough to prevent a rewrite in a "real language".

I've got all but one of my family members and in-laws using Linux. Xubuntu seems to be friendly enough for all of them.

Now I've got my parents working on cleaning out and deleting their Google accounts. My dad is open to the idea of Lineage OS on his phone. I never thought I'd get to this point.

@MarcatoMarc We run our farm business on Ledger. It's not difficult if you take the time to read the manual. I documented all of the tricks we used to deal with taxes and that sort of stuff. gemini://gemini.sensorstation.

Periodic reminder that no matter what corporations raised you, that still doesn't make them your friend. You can be a fan of Nintendo's games and understand that they're one of the greatest dangers for video game preservation. You can be a fan of Disney's movies and understand they've pillaged the public domain and done their best to pull the ladder up behind them. Corporations are cold, unfeeling machines, and no matter how much they pretend they're friendly, it's a Terminator underneath.

Folks making alternatives: don’t recreate the systems of closed, centralised silos. They’re designed with the needs and success criteria of closed, centralised organisations. You cannot compete with them on their own terms. They have the resources to create centralised workflows, you do not. And your success criteria are the opposite of theirs. You do not want to centralise information, power, and wealth. Think about where your strengths lie and design from first principles according to those.

@paul i never learned the internals of TeX but i'm guessing a programmable typesetter is still strictly superior to the W3C fuckstack.

What dystopia is this? Airdropping sterile fish into remote lakes in order to strike a balance between the human "need" to journey away from cities in order to kill fish for fun, and the dieoffs caused by climate change: the Hackaday piece presents this as normal, charming even. The stewardship ethic towards nature, with its implicit endorsement of human exceptionalism, is perverse at best. From a Buddhist perspective this looks like being reborn as a Yamaduta, one of the guardians of hell. hackaday.com/2021/08/18/airdro

I do recommend following hashtags, even in preference to following people. But you will find people in the conversations which hang off the hashtags.

You did well to include your hashtags of interest in this query - put them in your profile too, if you haven't already.

Be sure to engage in conversations, and make posts of your own, too.

Might be controversial, but I would also recommend sticking to your interests. If you mix up politics and anything else, it can be offputting.

@0 the best use of natural residue (there is no waste in nature) is to let it convert into manure in situ or elsewhere, and replace petrochemical fertilizer.
