What happens in Google Android's message and the dialer apps?
In short: each time you send a message or call someone, Google knows about it.
No way to opt out, users not informed, #GDPR infrigment.

Remember the Facebook routing failure in october 2021? The authoritative name servers were not reachable, sending resolvers in panic, retrying aggresively (128x requests at the .com name servers). Now, there is a proposal at #IETF to mandate caching of resolution failures by resolvers. "I told you it's down, don't ask again."
Corona
@kensanata ah ... the old normal 🙂
@jens a possible positive departure from the orientation of those thoughts (by a S.P.Bihari).
"In a seed falling to ground, sprouting into a seedling, growing into a plant, strengthening into a tree, flowering, fruiting, seeding ... Why isn't it understood or acknowledged that human involvement isn't needed at all!?"
@imgn deceptive by design — similar to defective by design?
Is 'social media' just a fancy phrase for 'word of mouth' or 'hearsay'?
@praveen that is my question, then. Is messaging the most important to your perceived target audience? I know you have been associated with volunteer XMPP, Matrix and Diaspora hosting, hence the question.
XMPP is attractive, but let us talk at feature level and consider AP too. Why not something like Libervia or Movim or Epicyon?
Why not provide stable centralized URI's separate from hosting of services? This is a great opportunity to share infrastructure and maintainence for e-mail and for VPN, for example.
P.S: In principle, I would be happy to join prav.app - great option to stop being a freeloader!
@xgqt @nyx honestly, what is there to like about Smalltalk the language? Like Lisp (and Forth? Definitely, Erlang and ML too!), it has a small core to build "everything" on, including base libraries ... except the runtime and graphics.
Does anything I can appreciate about Squeak so far - incredible 30-odd MB runtime on all 3 PC platforms with windowing and more, source code handling not hobbled by files - have anything to do with Smalltalk in particular? It seems like Lisp or Erlang too would have had such capabilities with the same focus in their engineering (probably better, due to more code being provably side-effect-free).
To be clear, I will be happy to be in the dynamic typing camp as well as the GC'd language camp (@nodefunallowed@mas.to posted about BDW GC freeing more memory than programmer 'free()' calls!). Ditto about malleable running programs, which Squeak et al take to heights with persistent images. And I won't complain about syntax or lack of it.
@praveen I have been wondering why single-purpose apps work for people rather than multi-purpose apps like Hubzilla (even accounting for UX ... deficiencies, and hosting headaches). But I have also seen immense pushback in a community Whatsapp group to clicking on an Etherpad document link to make a collaborative checklist, they preferred error-prone copy-paste-edit messaging!
Anyway, is there any evidence another chat (only) app will attract people? No network of people I know got on Quicksy when it gathered momentum, but there is selective consolidation on Telegram.
I think the sleeper hit of sorts has been small Nextcloud/ownCloud instances run by 1 member. Would co-op hosting for that have a better chance of uptake?
I find it facinating to see all this talk of #splinternet and calling for RIPE to cut off Russian ASNs (which they have rightly refused).
Any time I talk about sunsetting IPv4 I'm told there is no one with the power to do so and it "can't be done", but apparently some think we can just chop off a country and that it might be a good idea.
Russia has tested chopping *itself* off from the Internet (as have other oppressors) and may still do so. There's more risk of that than RIPE doing so.
@jgoerzen It's a pity that Briar, Meshtastic, Scuttlebutt & co bundle together a protocol, a UI and a fixed set of use-cases. I feel we need an ecosystem of similar tools but with shared protocols and libraries.

> yeah that stuff runs in this thread pool now
To me, this sounds like Erlang.
@0 timing is instructive. When did this Sarah Asmeta start wearing a hijab to work? In India, some students started doing it only a couple of months ago.
@0 weren't you referring to an instance of resistance to hijabs? There is a much more serious variant of this going on in India. It seems people here and there in different parts of the world are promoting hijab use at the same time, triggering a response which the hijab-promoters are then fanning into a conflict atleast in India.
@0
> hijab
So this is going on all over the world? It was fanned into a confrontation in India over the past month, Muslims have already assasinated a person in this atmosphere.
Today's random advice:
doing a thing makes doing that thing easier in the future.
Before doing a new thing, consider whether doing that more in the future will contribute positively to your life.
Some of my choices:
netflix? bad for me
writing code to concretize my understanding of something? always good for me
What are some of your choices?
