@simulo examples of UX-focused FOSS systems (not apps) that I am casually aware of: , . I am tempted to include and in that list, for techie properties like isolation and pre-emption that make great sense for regular use.

@codesections If you asked someone else to read them for you, they would be a socks proxy.

@aarroyoc personally I would ignore the markdown family and go with asciidoc. But given your choices, go with the most formalized thing available

Talking to parents who lost the entire contents of their Google accounts because of their children’s nudity freaked me out because I could easily imagine the same thing happening to me. So I collected all my memories from tech companies’ digital basements. As I grappled with the many gigabytes, my concern morphed from losing it all to figuring out what was actually worth saving. nytimes.com/2022/12/31/technol

Note 1: A reminder that Von Mises and Hayek were not against the state like today's "libertarians". They just wanted the state outside of economic life.
My idea of the state: it is for tail risks, s.a. wars, pandemics, safety, etc. (exactly as Hayek phrased it). Like medication.

@dangillmor @atomicpoet I'd never connected the dots, that the legal restrictions on Microsoft in part opened the door for Google to succeed. Thanks for making that connection.

To this day I have trouble not hating Microsoft, even as I use their github and VSCode (which they haven't ruined!)

@rbreich buy from your farmers market. Our relationship with the food we eat became so very wrong.

@tchambers people want centralization by all means. it's weird.
I think plain support of user RSA key is the ideal solution for authorization needs.

@musicmatze Unfortunately many open source projects are on Discord although there are good alternatives... I don't understand it either.

@berkes Also the client could indicate to the server that it has ipfs support so the server doesn't need to fetch anything at all, the client can fetch it.

I was just playing with #Prolog to build a recipe suggestion thing based on my fridge contents.

I learned that:
- I'm never going to bother tracking my fridge closely
- I don't even want suggestions.

Logic programing is tough.

@kensanata A thought-provoking article.
The aspect that I hate most in all this was not covered in the article but it made me realise it could be very bad indeed: it's about all the wasted energy to generate all that crap. If this really takes off in the next two years, then we'll be in even deeper trouble than we already are with internet CO2 emissions.
That alone is for me reason to oppose it.

It is a pity that / don't have -like profiles and -like aspects. I see many non-English all-topic accounts I'd like to follow parts of, that don't go through the continuous hassle of separating out non-English and topical posts into different accounts. On such non-AP platforms, I'd theoritically follow the English "aspect" of an account's tech profile (or an English+tech profile); they too'd find it hassle-free to post under the right aspect and profile.

The cultural answer is that Fediverse/ActivityPub conversations, while not perfect, are more genuine and interesting than anything I have tried elsewhere in over a decade. I am going to be spending most of my 2023 social media time here. Thus, Medium comes here, or my Medium reading goes on the back burner.

My hope is that if I delay reading programming books long enough they will simply become out of date

@lakelady I feel that @mike got that right with and saying 'no' to brands by renaming his work to 'Streams'. Site admins configure Streams to appear and do what they want (microblog, photos, etc.). Visitors who are logged into their account on any Streams site are automatically authenticated with that site on interaction, via (magic auth).

@atomicpoet couldn't servers solve the 1000-copies problem with ?

A new year's resolution for developers -- find someone whose product yours can interop with, say hey want to connect our products? and take yes for an answer.

Our #geekproblem are tend to be hardened monarchists, who have a problem understanding anything outside #feudalism as a valid form of "governance".

This is obviously CRAP #blocking of the change/challenge we need on the #openweb to step away from #deathcult worshiping of the #mainstreaming
