I'm pleased to report that I have now watched so much women's football highlights that I have confused the YouTube algorithm into thinking I am a lesbian.

@ttshaw were they showing ads on that instance, or were they charging?

@james - it really depends what you want to build... It's best to pick the right tool for the job... Not every tool is a hammer, and not every problem is a nail.

@galaxis @mtomczak@qoto.org yep, precisely

and "well this is a case of google NOT abusing their position to enforce a standard" doesn't hold up because google wants you to use WebP2 or AVIF instead, both things they've had major hands in

JXL is a standard by the fucking JPEG, which if you've forgotten stands for "Joint Photographic Experts Group", who are the closest thing we have to an unbiased third party to manage the standards

@cstross For all that configure, and the Autotools in general, are an unreadable mess, it is the build system that consistently gives me the least trouble when trying to build and install stuff on a non-standard system.

It may be ugly, but it does its job quite well.

@demiurg @casraf I am ignorant about the gnatliness of instances in the cloud, but has had - fully automated install - forever from what I recall. Nowadays there are reproducible builds and distributions like . I must be missing why has won over the cloud crowd (and why seems to be winning over the desktop crowd).

@darkphotonstudio Yes, sure, agreed, but if you watch politics at all, being the dumbest thing in a room hasn’t seemed to stop people from giving it power.

@Nick_Craver if we engineer our systems to require the nuclear launch codes to be printed out, we're guaranteed to be safe. I've not found a computer yet that can successfully print stuff without lots of manual fettling.

@waderoberts @Nick_Craver My thoughts exactly. I await my AI overlords. They certainly can't do a WORSE job than we already do . 😂 😅 🤔

@Nick_Craver of course, as soon as the machines figure out mutual trust networks we're all fucked

society: damn misinfo at scale is getting a bit out of hand lately. seems like a problem.

tech guys: i have invented a machine that generates misinformation. is that helpful?

@engarneering I think the Internet is as civil as you make it. I have an ad blocker, and my mute list works fine. If you don't like something, don't look at it; don't try to make other people stop looking at it.

3D printed SSD mounting rails I use in liberated computers. The used units I purchase seldom come with disk mounting accessories required to secure the disk properly inside the laptop. The rails solve that problem.

@strypey a bit into the tech side, maybe the offline-first focus should be at a lower level and work for all apps?

Instead of having to, say, allocate 100MB to cache posts and 5GB to cache photos, we should be able to allocate all we can spare to, say, pinning and all apps should deal with content hashes in their protocol and clients should pull from the local IPFS node rather than a CDN.

gnunet.org may already be like this

@xerz Smalltalk also has a compilable bytecode AND graphics drawing commands. IMO it would make a much better javascript than javascript

People don't fake depression, they fake being okay. Remember that and be kind.

Looking back, I really wish I'd had an experience of a day of uni life when I was in my first few years of high school. If I'd realised how much more autonomy I'd have as a uni student, I would have been keener to do it straight out of high school. It might have made high school feel more like a path to something I wanted to do, rather than just a sentence to be served.

My wife's new Mac laptop can't use the old CanoScan Lide 25 scanner of ours. The operating system hasn't been able to do it for years. It would require reinstalling Homebrew and fiddling and tinkering.
On my laptop, I hit the magic key and type "scan" and #Gnome suggests "Simple Scan". I start the app and it shows me the name of my scanner. I click the button and it scans. I click the other button and it saves a PDF. I click the scissors button and it crops. I can start anew, or just press scan again and it'll add a second page. And if I pick Text, I get a PDF that's about 20× smaller.
Whoever wrote Simple Scan, thank you very much. It does exactly what I want.

Discovered during the week I was unable to access a Kindle book purchased in 2013. Reason? The order was “too old”, and refund issued to buy again. Which was pointless as the book is now more expensive than when I bought it.

Subsequently discovered 66(!!) other ebooks no longer available for download.

Currently 40 minutes in to a support chat with Amazon.

About to learn, I think, whether we purchase ebooks, or rent them…
