@rysiek
Great article. What I took away from it is that BS decentralizes the bill and centralizes the profit.
@tchambers @activitypubblueskybridge @mmasnick @anildash @manton Before you invest too much energy in this effort check out the Bluesky Terms of Service for using the AT Protocol. Currently they are asserting a unrestricted free-for-all license to any content the touches the AT Protocol (https://staging.bsky.app/support/tos). Seems crazy, but arguably you could be opening the door to giving Bluesky all the Fediverse content. In any case the #DataProtection issues needs to be nailed down.
> Central banks are thinking about digital money
Nope. They are thinking about digital tokens that can represent money like cash does. Ok that one is a bit of a nitpick, but this piece is published on a site that claims to advise investors about digital finance. You'd think their writers would know the difference between money, cash, currency etc and use the right terms in the right places.

I try to pick my battles but here’s a hill I will die on:
Remove all instances of the words “just” and “simply” from your technical documentation. These are marketing terms used to sell a product, promising ease of use.
Someone reading your technical documentation needs help: implying what they’re trying to do is “simple” will only frustrate them. Wrong audience.
In the late 1880s, when steam ships were replacing sailing cargo ships, one of the last roles for the sailing ships was to carry coal around the world to supply ports where steamships wanted to go. A clean technology was essential to enable the growth of a dirty technology. And even today, fossil fuels aren’t magically just everywhere. A gigantic *** 40% *** of global shipping is just moving fossil fuels. So eliminating fossil fuel also drastically cuts global shipping emissions. #climate #ships
@tanepiper @tetrislife @JungleGeorge24 This would be the case on a good operating system IF electron was installed system-wide, but bundling it with every app destroys that.
That's also my number one issue with containers.
Don't be afraid of super intelligent AI in the future when you can worry about greedy companies in the present time.
@chrisshaw@twit.social #Epicyon comes quite close, I suspect. https://epicyon.net
@deshipu as long as there is individual property (beyond 1 house, I guess), there will be inheritance.
@joeldrapper @thomasfuchs @jsadow The protocol supports it but Mastodon doesn’t reach out to servers it doesn’t know about and it knows about servers due to follows. If server admins wanted to fix this locally they could have bot users that participating servers mutually follow. Or do something comparable in the software if the BDFL would approve it.
@anildash My strong suspicion is that Bluesky (or any similar corporate product that preaches federation) will use federation for their initial growth spurt, and then find a way to pull up the drawbridge once private equity or the Saudis decide that lock-in sounds more profitable.
I don't know why I would be so cynical, except for my lying eyes and the entire history of Facebook, Twitter, Google, YouTube, RSS, XMPP, OpenID, and even Open Graph meta tags.
@tanepiper is this just a file duplication problem? If all Electron apps on a system were built with the same version of Electron, and their object files were deduplicated, would it reduce the memory footprint when all the apps are running?
@JungleGeorge24
@zodmagus plus, doesn't ChatGPT pirate content generated by others just by giving you an answer???
@VornhagenJB am I a Luddite for not being enthusiastic about ChatGPT and its ilk?
@tanepiper is #Tauri not the Webview for desktop you mention? And why would Webviews for desktop run lighter than Chrome?
@JungleGeorge24
@tanepiper The MS Teams app on Linux is a prime example - a completely worthless, feature deprived resource hog.
@tanepiper @JungleGeorge24 AIR/Flex were fantastic, QtQuick is still excellent, and XULRunner could have been the compromise solution that kept us from our current reality.
But people got horny for Node.js and V8 and while they’re happy to write HTML to make a desktop app, they weren’t happy to write similarly structured XML (in the form of XUL) because XML is for old people or something.
@lightweight
I think I am not nitpicking when I say that @seth said OSS and not FOSS
