@filipesm @aral its flaws are that it was launched after AP was standardized and widely used.

Promoting the BS protocol right now is reckless and destructive. We need to rally around the protocols that are working, and improve them with extensions, not bottom up rebuilds.

The people working on BS know how much damage they could do, and they're continuing anyway, because they don't share our values.

Please don't give them attention. They need to disappear quickly.

@thingsiplay @BrodieOnLinux As I've been saying since the start, but for different reasons, #Ada is what should've been used anyway.

Everytime someone talks about creating a foundation to help a programming language or a software, this is what I see.

@sam3322

Before you follow anyone after creating your account, fill out you profile, it doesn't have to be much, 4 or 5 hashtags about your interests to start with.

here in the fediverse following ppl without any info in your profile just gets you muted or blocked by many

@publicvoit What I see is since Mastodon took off, there are clear tendencies to centralize the place by its founder. It is all public.

In one of his recent interviews he claimed the diversity of instances as a "historical" thing. And he claims that there is no alternative to mastodon.social as the default. And now the mobile app was released with the assumption that people are not smart enough to choose from a variety of instances and instead are directed to mastodon.social.

So you create a deeply decentralized place, with the help of thousands of others, and then, after it got successful *despite* being decentralized, you make a 180° turn and promote that centralization is the only thing people understand?

And why you would think that it is a good thing to try compete with Twitter escapes my understanding. Do you want all that FUD that is running Twitter to be on Mastodon at all costs?

More and more instance operators are dissatisfied with the way their ideas and contributions are handled (or dismissed). Just have a look at the GitHub issues for Mastodon. The direction is clear and there is no indication that it will not get worse in my personal opinion.

@konstantin I’ve alway considered #Erlang/#Elixir to be what microservices aspire to become.

One of the things #Elixir helped me remember, is how cool it is to create complex systems without the overhead of microservices. At first, it was even a bit confusing because I constantly had the feeling that I'm forgetting something ("What? How come that's all I have to do and not a single line of YAML had to be written").

Not exactly #smallweb but definitely medium-sized blobs of developer happyness :).

@ryan are the services you run packaged in sandstorm.io ? You could run Sandstorm and get better isolation at least.

@gizmomathboy @ovid @mcgrew It’s that every #Electron app is its own #Chromium and #Node runtime and process. They don’t use a shared engine like the #WebOS apps likely did.

If you want to see the difference find some Electron apps that are also available in #PWA form and run them all via the same browser app.

@TheSteve0 @andypiper @evan If that's all you want, it's even easier than that. ActivityPub is RSS based, so you could filter the RSS based on the presence of that tag with a bit of regex.

@monocles
> You could just use monocles browser on Android

I had no idea, thanks for the tip :) Also thanks for getting a better browser into F-Droid. The options there were very limited when I first looked for a browser there.

@fdroidorg

Translation; we do the same dodgy spycraft as every other tracking platform, but since that's going out of fashion, we'll use a word salad of NewSpeak to pretend we do something else people are still into, like "trust".

"When more than 15 percent of your words (except verbs and proper nouns) are three or more syllables, readers work with difficulty to understand your message. To reduce larger words, consider these tips: a) Use about instead of approximately; use rather than utilize; b) Convert nouns ending in –ion into verbs. Use “We considered ...” instead of “We took into consideration ...”; c) Replace endeavor with try, aggregate with total, and optimum with best."

That's a great way make technical writing in English more accessible!

Can you link me to an example?

@float13

@fedi if I had to quote only 1 point from the blog post:
> Git and Docker aren’t installation methods
They are on either end of the "shipping software" gradient, and both are abhorrent.

A quick reminder that @laura@mastodon.laurakalbag.com and @aral@mastodon.ar.al will be live tomorrow at 5PM Irish time (UTC+1) with Small is Beautiful.

Our special guest is @gabek@social.gabekangas.com, founder of Owncast.

We’ll be talking with Gabe about Owncast and federation as well as how we should ship software not code (https://gabekangas.com/blog/2022/06/ship-software-not-code/).

As others have pointed out, there are already fedi apps that offer quote tooting. Millions of fedi accounts are already using them. I'm not a fan of them either but I think the writing is on the wall now. I'm way more worried about setting a default instance for every new user. Isn't pushing the majority of users on a single instance is clearly "the end of the Mastodon as we know right now"?

@cozymel @chema The whole quote post thing has been a long time coming. Keeping the thing at the out of the official app was only an idealistic impairment of newcomers. With Graze, everyone on Mastodon has had them for a while, they're already implemented in the apps like @tooot and they're perfectly common in the rest of the Fediverse as well.
The lack of implementation has been just a show at the end. And it´s good to see it ending.

@cozymel
Yeah. I didn't ask for it, but since it's coming we'll make the most of it. Who knows, maybe our community will handle it better than the Hellsite could. 🤷
@chema @Mastodon

Glad to hear quote posts are coming. Not because I wanted them, but because I am tired of reading the debate.
