@jaromil can't it be reported as a troll account via a public message tagging the admins? Just to make their intentions more apparent?

@sil Well, my #mp3 and #ogg tracks are also just "trained" on uncompressed audio data -- they are a totally different thing.

@sil I mean: the owners of LLMs say "dont sue us for copyright infringement, the trained models are not a copy of the training data, but only a lossy compression of it" -- however psychoacustic compression like mp3s are also only "lossy compressions". If the argument is accepted for one it should be for the other too: If #AI does not have to license its training data, mp3s shouldnt be copyright infringement. And vice versa.

@anarchopunk_girl I don't, but aren't there existing well-tuned implementations to study and learn from?

Fascism, negative

@chris
As a non-US person, I do wonder if it is at all possible to reverse injustice within modernity when it is a massive edifice built on injustice.

Obviously, Latin America's natives are extinct, but First Nations people and descendents of enslaved Africans aren't - and the interests of all whites and all blacks in the continental US are, by definition, arrayed against the interests of First Nations people.
@alex

This is an issue for #accessibility and #inclusion, in particular when the reason the software is not available is tied to the needs of marginalized groups, such as when #poverty makes it impossible to own sufficiently modern devices, etc.

"Web Environment Integrity" is a deeply #antisocial proposal, and goes counter to the design principles of the web.

I just recommended "The Mythical Man Month" by Fred Brooks to my manager. He had never heard of it or Fred Brooks before. This makes me sad.

Deth Veggie's First Rule of Internet is: LIE TO EVERY SITE ABOUT EVERYTHING YOU CAN.

Until I moved from the dead bird site to Mastodon I never realized that I had so much pent up civility.

you know, we're actually making a huge mistake by publicly criticizing all the useless AI shit coming out these days

we should just nod our heads and say "oh it's so brilliant and great" and watch every company who bases themselves on it go bankrupt as it tells people the first ingredient in ice cream is hot sauce

i simply propose we stop doing QA work for these idiots

I am very skeptical of any attempt to monetize and homogenize package management by circumventing distros. No matter what they say it's just a vector for installing proprietary software or software that's such a mess that only the devs know how to build it and might as well be proprietary.

I sometimes wonder how much pain could have been saved in computing if we'd decided (as one example) that ".public" and ".private" were the right suffixes, rather than ".pub" and nothing. If all the little times we decided saving keystrokes was more important than cognitive ergonomics had gone the other way.

No, I don't want your email newsletter. I *never* want an email newsletter.

The last thing I want is "updates direct to my inbox".

If you've got an RSS feed, I might subscribe to that though.

DisCO results from the actual years-long experience of the Guerrilla Media Collective. So it comes from the ground as you say, describes a model to run organizations, with principles and practice patterns. They learned and discussed various other models and tried to include their best insights.

There's a lot to read and unpack in the docs but it's not pie-in-the-sky, it's real shit to help run our orgs. These already do: disco.coop/labs/
@strypey

On July 20th two years ago a "really bad" (cit. ZDNet) systemd bug allowing any unprivileged user to crash a Linux system was discovered. The bug was introduced in 2015 and it affected every machine running systemd for more than 6 years.

@strypey would be interested in your summary of it. Many of these solutions sound divorced from what happens on the ground, only some adjunct approaches like loomio look useful.

@housepanther @renchap One of the top perks of separating the moderation tools out from Mastodon itself would be that other fediverse software could *use those same tools*.

One of those immediate lessons from the Lemmy/Kbin spike was that fediverse moderation tools are very, very unequally available to different platforms.
