> proxy vote for portfolio of issues
There is an algorithmic alternative based on pairwise choice, which interested me.

Threw up interesting patterns (just a few people voted)

@strypey
tl;dr for the previous post
- getting elected to "parliament" comes with good pay and perks
- the electorate hopefully just wants a person who will listen to them and get work done
- the person can also do what needs to be done, and get it approved at the next meeting with the electorate

@leadegroot
The framework for larger issues hopefully can be built up on this

@strypey What I *would* like to see (and I realise you are in .nz and I am in .au and you have that interesting proportional system already, so its different...)
is an MP elected on the basis of "these 10K (pick a number) people voted for me" not "the most people in this electorate voted for me".
(Lots of details to be worked out. Does it need to be "you can only vote for people within (pick a number) 1000km of you"?)
but _actual_ representation!

There was a surprisingly effective twist on this approach in a local election manifesto recently, and the candidates had mild traction in pockets on polling day.

> Why do I have to do theirs too?

If you want democracy, you have to participate. Otherwise you're relying on benevolent dictatorship as a substitute. The failure modes of that form of governance are pretty obvious, and have been playing out in anglophone countries since the neoliberal coups of the 1980s. Key, Ardern, Hipkins and Luxon are all products of this rot.

Huh. I never thought about it before, but this is a very pithy description of corporate social media DataFarms:

"The spectacle is not an aggregate of images but a social relation among people, mediated by images."

If I could pick any rule of industrial economics to receive a thorough re-examination by our people, it would be the one that says that all hard physical work is “drudgery” and not worth doing.

@alex Browsing your wiki just now with cadaver:
cd+ls+cat, and I was like, man this is cool as fuck. I should ask you
about creating a wiki space for blvuug.org sometime. I realized a few
months back that I don't want to self-host much other than XMPP, mail,
(also public-inbox + lists), DNS, my little nothing of a website, and code repos.
blvuug.org is currently ikiwiki, running in a little container that I
update far too infrequently for my taste.
It looks like you have a very nice infrastructure there for doing wikis.

> file systems for cross-platform access

Bad situation. I wonder why isn't the answer, the folks and the courts did so much.

The ingenous idea I picked up somewhere was that the filesystem, , had cross-platform support! A UDF-formatted USB stick works fine across atleast Linux and Windows. Startlingly, there is no filesystem-checker for UDF, which might be a deal-breaker. Or maybe only put checksummed archives on it or something?

Have I mentioned lately how much fun TiddlyWiki is? It’s so much fun. This would be enough on its own, but good lord it’s also crazy powerful. It’s right up there with Emacs and Tinderbox on the fun/powerful scale.

#tomo update for anyone interested in seeing how the sausage is being made with a new decentralized #nntp based better-than #reddit network:

- the server software is a fork of Rocksolid-Light github.com/novabbs/rocksolid-l
- the back-end for connecting to the server and reading/writing posts is 100% nntp protocol compatible.
- you can connect to a tomo shard from any newsreader like thunderbird (win/mac/linux), tin, SeaMonkey, NewsTap (iOS) or even classic programs like Forté Agent and Netscape Communicator
- posts written on the tomonet.* discussion group hierarchy are shared across all tomo shards.
- posts written to private groups on your shard, stay only on your shard.

i'm currently rewriting the front-end so users/shard admins/mods can do anything from the web interface, without dropping to a shell. now you can:
- create your own discussion groups
- delete messages, delete groups
- permit/deny access to admin and moderator areas

the big job this week was writing a Roles & Permissions system (RBAC) so group owners, admins and moderators can manage who can read/post, create/delete groups, and so on.

the most important part of this involves running a tomo shard itself. it's running a #BBS in 2023: as a sysop you are responsible for your users' data, dealing with moderation, and carrying (and not carrying) the kinds of groups your users are into. i'm putting a massive amount of care into providing sysops and mods with the front-end tools for making running a shard enjoyable

The art of our time is noisy with appeals for silence. A coquettish, even cheerful nihilism. One recognizes the imperative of silence, but goes on speaking anyway. Discovering that one has nothing to say, one seeks a way to say that.

@chickfilla it would be interesting if Plan9 did Bluetooth; the Linux Bluetooth stack was ripped out by one Linux distro as I recall, because it was a huge codebase.

@birnim@fosstodon.org as an Emacs guy, I know what you are saying (org-mode at my day-job). Just that the ubiquitous webview is a tempting target, and projects like Tiddlywiki and Delta Chat (and ) are delivering so much out of that + WebDAV/e-mail.

Graeber said that if you actually listen to kids when they're engaged in imaginative play, the single largest activity in terms of time is devoted to arguing about the rules.

Humanity, if left to itself, will auto-assemble into bureaucracy (cf Wikipedia.)

It was a suggestion, to record and have the option of putting it up somewhere. I don't have the hardware to use it, I just wish pmOS reaches people whose usecases it fits.
@strypey

@wekeys@framapiaf.org @strypey you could do/record a screencast while at it ...
