@strypey out of curiosity, does your native language have a term (or terms) for tolerance?

English is an ... inadequate language (free/libre/open source software people know it!). Tolerance might mean different things to different people.

Personally, a native term close to tolerate I know basically means "withstand". I wouldn't make a virtue of people having to withstand too many things. With that background, tolerance (if different from withstanding) seems wholly artificial.

Let me tell you the secret of the "Everything App".

It's real, it's not called X, and it's about 33 years old. It's called a Web Browser.

Despite a decade of walled gardens trying hard to ruin it, you can still do pretty much any task you need on the web.

You can even make websites into apps with Progressive Web Apps (two clicks on WordPress).

The everything app is old, and under siege daily. But it works, it's resilient, and it's magical.

@strypey I go for "intentional smear" since it is written as though they made an honest attempt to use a server but maligned the whole network in the headline.

Maybe this whole "Mastodon server" branding is the problem, setting it up for failure. With "fediverse instance" instead, a review would be clearly about specific servers.

So, were these people so confused by the Mastodon UI that they genuinely couldn't find the block button? Or is this an intentional smear against Mastodon, by people who have some reason to make sure the fediverse doesn't succeed? I mean, once you've figured out what the reply, favourite, boost and bookmark buttons under each post do, there's only one left to try. The one that pops up a menu including all the moderation functions.

2) It could help to introduce people to the fediverse as an ocean, where it's normal to hop from island to island. Someone suggested highly moderated onboarding servers, where it's made *super* clear during sign-up that all accounts are deleted after, say, 3 months. By then, the person might have decided the verse isn't for them. OR, they've got to know the waters well enough to choose a server to move to, and the UI actively holds their hand during that first move.

Unless you are from Turkey, India or China ... you know, countries that have more culture individually than the rest of the world combined ... this is just colonial blather. Twitter doesn't matter to non-colonials.

I posted about switching to Firefox as my "daily driver" browser as a little tiny step away from Chromium browser hegemony, and I had a ton of people in the replies suggesting I should just use Brave or Edge or Opera or Vivaldi instead.

I'm a little concerned that people don't realize just how pervasive this problem is. Every single one of those sits on top of the Chromium codebase.

@lispi314 @natty also , where the program state can effectively be dealt with as "just" a cache of computations that gets refreshed on every program start.

That is ignoring the gnarly bits like external state that no environment has a chance of getting right.

Also , the other extreme where you can design for not letting the system go down at all.

@alex maybe its like professional sports i.e. not for everyone.

I'm trying to figure out how to write a function in #csharp that takes an IEnumerable<Expression<Predicate<T>>> and returns a Expression<Predicate<T>> that evaluates to an "and" of all the items. I know it's possible but I haven't done it before and haven't yet had the time to figure it out. The difficult part is that I need expressions not functions. It would be a lot easier if it were just functions. It's also annoying because I've been learning #Prolog and #Scheme on the side in recent years and this sort of #metaprogramming is trivial in those.

Everyone: Let's use this worldwide communication network to download all the movies and TV show we could ever want.
Hollywood Execs: But that would be piracy!
Everyone: So what?
Hollywood: If you pirate these movies, the people that make them won't get paid for doing so.
Everyone: So if we get the movies through you, they will get paid?
Hollywood:
Hollywood: I never said that.

Getting back into the habit of turning my overly long fediverse posts and blog comments into posts on my own blog.

Just how does one switch from FarceBook to fediverse?

The golden middle ground of programming project happiness: finding a directory full of weird files and a Makefile that is at most two pages long explaining how things are generated from each other. Not full of weird shit, not distributed over many places, not generated or updated on the fly, not 20 pages long.
Also, a README file telling me what I wanted to accomplish in the first place. 😅

I like the realism of the doughnut model. As a layperson, my apprehension is about the size of the doughnut, especially in high-demand economies.

On the other hand there are these… call them "strong advocates" who see everything as a model of the traveling salesman problem or whatever and they have done us no favors thinking the entire world can just move to 5GLs.

But then there are so many problems that are essentially trivial to express in prolog and we spend thousands of lines doing them badly in Java or C++ or Go etc.

We're flushing billions of gallons of water down the toilet so computer networks can give us wrong answers to easy questions.

It increasingly feels like everyone is doing "AI" to justify the massive crypto setups they already had.

@XOrgFoundation @mitsunee Dude it was obvious from the context @mitsunee was referring to X11 and Wayland. Yes twitter is an anti trans site. But when someone tells you that they still use X you should assume they mean X11 considering who you are. Read twice then post, you'll be less likely to be thought a troll.

@hikari @XOrgFoundation I just watched how a speaker that gave a presentation he was asked to also share on zoom switch back to X because it did not work on Wayland. Good that X still existed on his notebook. Also I use X everyday for remoting. I also like how the modular design allows innovation in window manager design.

@strypey You promote it by linking to stuff there. Same as anywhere else.

No one went looking for a way to make videos and then found YouTube. They had links sent to them, and then they realized they kept coming back to the same site.
